My girlfriend likes receiving flowers, but always says "don't give me flowers." That said, she likes receiving jewelry a lot better, even a cheap pair of earrings that cost less than flowers will make her happier than a huge bundle of flowers.

I scored big points recently when I got her a silver ring with her birthstone. The ring cost less than going out to dinner at a decent restaurant, but the smile on her face was priceless when she put it on and it fit. So, now I know her ring size, and the next ring is likely going to be much much more expensive...

called in a favor on v-day and had one custom made. Gave it to her later that night.

Indeed. Amazon has a surprisingly decent lineup of inexpensive jewelry. That includes precious stones like rubies, sapphires, emeralds etc (lab created). Go science!

Stay away from the gold and you can get a lot of bang (heh) for your buck.
