My G3258 was a poor overclocker - not bad with 1.3 Vcore though

I'm overclocking it on a gigabyte H81M-S1 board with the most recent bios(FH) in windows 8.1. I hit a limit at 3.8 ghz. I've been able to boot into 4 ghz once, but it red screened immediately and wouldn't boot back in. I've used voltages up to 1.2V, set uncore anywhere from 32 up to 40, vrin was at 1.9, ring anywhere from 1.050 to 1.2, no change..

Ideas? Suggestions?

Might've lost the chip lottery? Can you still return it and try it again with a new chip? xD

(This would just be my assumption here)

Are you using the stock cooler or something better? Lower temps = better clock potential.

I bet it's that motherboard.
Very weak VRM setup

Probably not... my G3258 had the same limits. I got it to 3.8GHz and nothing more on a Gigabyte board; the previous owner had it on a Z87 board and couldn't get it any higher, either.

That's pretty crazy bad. I had one earlier for an HTPC that only got up to 4.2 @ 1.2 and I thought that was bad.

impossible to know for sure, but 2+1 is very weak even for a low power chip like this

That sounds like about how my overclocking went with a G3258 with my GA-H81M-DS2V v1.0 board when I got it. It had BIOS F5 out of the box, which supported G3258 overclocking.

I tried just increasing the multi, was able to boot Win7 64-bit at 38x, blue-screen at 39x, and no POST at 40x. But running DC load on it, I had to downclock to 36x, otherwise it would crash.

When Gigabyte released the F6 BIOS for my board, to fix Win10 issues, I found that now, I could magically overclock higher. I could also increase the vcore beyond 1.200V.

I was able to boot Win7 64-bit at 42x, but it wasn't 100% stable running DC load, even boosting the vcore from 1.200V to 1.300V. So I had to settle for 40x at 1.200V, which is where I'm at now.

So check for a BIOS update, it might improve overclocking.

Edit: Oh, there was something else I discovered, with the newer F6 BIOS. Setting XMP, would prevent me from being able to overclock as high, for some reason.

And... When you bought it?
I don't be surprised if the chips made in some countries like Israel or Malasya ended as awful overclockers...

Its for my son and 3.8 ghz is still much better and faster than how his old sempron system ran so I'm not pissed off, just disappointed. I'll look for a newer bios and check XMP. I appreciate all the assistance. Its a hard and fast wall at 3.8 ghz though.. default everything up to 3.8 ghz, but no amount of voltage manipulation will allow it to go higher. There are some settings in the bios that I'm not sure how to set either, like KOC, some pll settings, etc.

I bought a G3258, and I wanna say your not alone.
The highest stable OC I could get mine was 4ghz.
Thats at a around 1.26v. (might be giveing it more than it needs, but if I lower it, Id get crashes, so I think it needs it)

Thats with a MSI H81M-P33 Motherboard. I havnt flashed its bios or anything.

A tiny bit disappointed after hearing how many people claim 4.2-4.5ghz with them, but.. it runs everything fine so far, and I view overclocking more as "free" extra performance, any gain you get is good, and something to be happy about.

Still to go from 3.2ghz -> 4.00ghz is a 25% boost.

Im happy with the performance I got considering what I paid for it.
Cheap CPU + CPU MB + Cheap Ram => still runs great.
Paired it with a Geforce 750ti and gave that a slight OC as well.

My son's old pc ran the heaven benchmark and got a score of 1107. Running the same benchmark on his new machine with the Radeon 7870 netted 1909, so it should be very noticeable in his games. Min frames went from 7 on the old system to 31 on the new one. Overall, he's happy, but I wouldlike to eek out another 2-400 mhz, just because. Also need another 4 GB stick of ram.

I'm currently using the stock cooler.. are you? I ordered a hyper 212 and it should be here early next week.

Mine was never stable at 1.2V It's been running at 1.30V for more than a year now @ 4.4GHz on the stock cooler. I will clock it down using my batch scripts if I'm going to be running something like a long encoding session, but general usage never pegs the cores to 100% for long enough for any significant heat to build up. I actually did buy a $30 cooler when it was on sale for $10, but its just been sitting on my shelf for the last 9 months lol.

I'll try 1.3 volts when I get home. What do you guys set uncore at? The docs I read said to set it at or above your cpu multiplier setting if overclocking. Do you set it at the multiplier setting?

Yes this is with a 212 plus.
It doesnt really get very hot (like 62degrees celcius max (prime95)) or loud, and like I said performance seems fine, so Im happy.

I use it for dolphin and it does that really well.

I had a Phenom II x4 965 that I oced before, and the differnce between them in performance is massive.

Got mine to a quick and dirty 4.5 Ghz @ 1.35v within about 30 minutes of fiddling on a good Z87 motherboard (found a Z87 MPower Max AC from Newegg for $90 new). Had a Thermalright True Spirit 140 that I wasn't using so it stays cool. Only thing I adjusted was the cpu multiplier, voltage and LLC. As for the more esoteric settings, they didn't help matters at all. Fiddling with the uncore just made it unstable. I don't know what it might do at 1.2v. Given how much it takes for 4.5 Ghz I'd bet it wouldn't go over 4.0 GHz at best.

Mine's from Amazon, btw.

My $49 G3258 bought at Micro Center can barely overclock. Anything over 3.6GHz crashed. I gave up completely, ran it at stock speed.

Guess Micro Center has different batch than everyone else, that's why it has much lower price.

That's where I got mine, Microcenter in Overland Park, Kansas. 3.8 isn't bad, but when I get home, I'll try 1.3v just to see if it works.

I got mine on Amazon for $55. If you wait a little while you may see the same price. For a while now prices have been dipping that low every so often. I realize this is more than MC but if you aren't near one or like me are just too lazy to drive 40 minutes there and back again it is a pretty good deal and you get the great Amazon return policy if the processor doesn't o/c as much as you want.

Clocks to 4.2 easily on my h97 board with the stock cooler. It will go higher and remains stable but it was getting too hot under mprime (Linux equivalent of Prime95).

Excuse me, where that chip came from? That would help the rest to avoid those chips.
