OK, I cant stand it anymore!!!

my frame rates with a K63+450@600 and Geforce are sweet. You and your p3 highhorses are so pitiful. I have a cB0 700@933 and ya know what? ITS NOT WORTH IT!

Neither is this stinkin 150 dollar mobo and duron!

SURE, this guy could go out and spend around 200 bucks to get the new duron, mobo (and probably a new case) in order to satisfy some sick need for speed, but I have to say, I LOVE my K63!

for some reason, (L3 cache?) this k63 seems to SCREAM on things like IE and Office 2000. Sure, maybe you can get 100fps on a P3900+ but I am PLENTY happy with a geforce2 and the K63 with around 60-70fps.

I honestly dont know who is seeing the differences, I have been playing Q3 and Unreal just fine on this k63, and I think this guy will be quite happy.

Then, maybe when these socket a mobo's are discontinued (like in a year or so...) he can pick up something for cheap.

OOH! Had to edit my origional Q3 demo 1 scores to 29.5 fps, just got a new (used) Sony trinitron 15" monitor for my work station and now that I can adjust my refresh rate, my score went up a full 8fps even though I set my resolution up from 640x480 to 800x600!:Q
At home I get 91.fps at 1024x768 with my sig rig.

Honestly though, folks- don't confuse the K63 or 3+ with the K62 which was stinky in comparison. This one may not be a screamer, but a K63+ @ 600MHz *will* outperforma a stock Celeron 600. Nothing really wrong with that, especially for the price! A Geforce2 MX would be the perfect match for it- a GTS is a bit overkill, although it **might** mean getting higher resolution or better FSAA for *free*. I stress *might*.

Anyways.... there's more than enough speculation going on. I much prefer straightforward and honest talk than people beating around the bush and outright lying.

Tom's Hardware has done a lot of testing on the K6+ chips.
First off, the K6-2 runs about 15% to 20% slower than the K6-III (all non+).With this in mind, a K6-2 500 runs about 10% slower than a K6-2+ 500. So, a K6-III 500 (non-plus) is still faster than a K6-2+ 500. A K6-III and a K6-III+ perform about the same, with a slight edge going to the non-plus, BUT, the + is easily overclockable, where the non-plus, is only slightly overclockable.

In gaming benchmarks, it takes a K6-2+ 600MHz to come close to a Celeron 500, while a K6-III+ at 500MHz would would be just a tad behind the Celeron 500. BUT real gamers, (the kind that buy High end Video cards), rarely run there CPU's at stock, and most overclock as high as they will go. So while you may squeeze 600MHz out of a K6+, Celeron owners would also squeeze much more than that out of there chips, and therefore, the K6+ doesn't come close to what a Celeron can get. Now to say the K6+ runs nearly as fast as a Duron, well that's just plain stupid, and proves NO knowledge of PC's by that statement.

Yes, you can get some decent FPS with a K6+ and a GF2 GTS. Sure you'll have to run in 16 bit or turn down some of the details, but it can be made to work fine. It just in no way compares to Intel or the newer AMD chips. And with chips that cost $60 running at 1GHz, it doesn't make much sense spending that much on a K6+. The old &quot;gotta buy a new board&quot; theory doesn't float anymore either, as most K6+ chips will not work in most SS7 boards. Even if you had an old SS7 that did support the K6+, you would still be running old AGP (including only 2x max), old UDMA (no working ATA 66/100), and probably old VIA chipset (compatabilty issues). What good is a fast CPU and video card if you can't use it the way it was intended.

K6 III+ blows goats ? Who writes your material ? K6 III+ is at the bottom of the heap ? I'm sure we can find several versions of anything that include Classic Athlons, Durons, P III, P II, Celerons that fall short of the K6 III+'s benchmarks in several areas. Therefore $ 50-60 for a cpu upgrade in SS7 isn't a bad option. To base a purchase on a complete build system is another story and in three months, anything less than a P4 or DDR AMD system will be bottom of the heap. Where do you guys find the time to play these silly little games anyway. I spend all day on a computer and when I have spare time(evenings), I generally use it to pursue knowledge and information that will improve my position in life. Other spare time I spend exercising and outdoors(we're not moles, you know) !

BTW, those that also think the K6-2 is sorry, yes when you compare it to something that was developed two years after. The company that I work for gave me a P II 400 about the same time I built my first K6-2 400 a couple years ago. For the business applications that I work with, I found the machine they put on my desk to be lacking what my home system was able to do. Running the same Access database application vba code and macros for database applications that were larger than 750 mb's(mostly raw data), I found that by timing the automated routines from start to finish, The K6-2 400 was done with the job and waiting for the P II everytime, back then and even today !

I jumped into this thread to see what the heck all these posts were about. Seems as usual things erupted into a flame war. Since there is some talk about the K6-3+, I'll share a little knowledge on it. I have one, so I would say I'm qualified to do so. 1st, I'll agree it makes no sence to setup a new setup based on one of these. There are much better ways to spend your $$. If however, its an upgrade for an older system, its pretty darn nice. Here's my example. One of my kids PC's is an old ASUS HX chipset mobo. Its been the recipient of several hand me downs from various projects through the years. The basic specs:
ASUS T2P4 HX mobo
128 meg EDO
Nice AT case
Voodoo 3 3000 PCI
Soundblaster
3Com PCI nic
Promise U66 controller
WD 7200 rpm 15 gig UDMA66 drive
K6-3+ @ 6 x 75 (450 MHz)

The old CPU was an MMX 233 @ 262. The upgrade to the K6-3+ cost me $50. Did it make a difference? HELL YA! For the kids use it was &quot;OK&quot; before. I have all the PC's on a network. Sometimes I'll have a friend come over and we want to do some one on one lan action. With the K6, now its possible. UT normal detail runs great. I couldn't even think of running it before. Even with everything turned down it was unplayable. Now it's not only playable, but actually plays very smooth. This is with normal detail as well. Q2 flies. I haven't put Q3 on it yet, but will. The combo of the K6, Glide from the V3, and the fast minigl for Q2 make that thing a rockin little PC. It was probably the best $50 upgrade I've done in awhile. Outside of shooter games, Its like a whole new PC. Doesn't have that &quot;old slow PC&quot; feel to it anymore. General Windows use is very fast now. Everthing just pops now. Nice.

So, I guess it depends on your application. For mine, it was well worth it. Yes, I also could have bought a cheap Duron..and a new mobo...and some DIMM memory..and a new ATX Case... Not for $50.
