My GeForce4 Ti 4600 Impressions

I got my GeForce4 Ti 4600 (VisionTek) yesterday and here are some of my initial thoughts:

1. Man, is this card long! It almost did NOT fit because of where my IDE connections are located on my motherboard. This board reminds me a lot of the Vodoo 5500 because of its length and all the capacitors. I am not sure, but was some of the technology from the 3dfx AA used in this card (since Nvidia acquired company)?

2. This card was a big step up in performance from my trusty GeForce2 Ultra. First off, the new card added about 4000 points to my 3DMark2001SE score. Secondly, I can play RTCW, Q3, UT at "my" maximum resolutions with Quincunx AA and 4X Anisotropic Filtering at 80/90+ fps.

3. Image quality is a step up from my GF2 Ultra. 2D looks noticeable better.

4. Did I mention it cost a "chunk of change"? At $400, I don't think I will be upgrading my video card for a while!

I made a custom cooler for my geforce 4..

Before I was running 312/700 w/ the stock stuff heatsink.
I know 312 was the max gpu setting not sure about the ram.

I did a mod that cost almost nothing.. still testing ...

This is without replacing the stock chipset fan and adding ram heat sinks, I'll try to post pictures tomorrow.

Max setting as in the GPU hit the limits or the program you used is limiting the o/c?? Try Powerstrip if the program is the limiting factor.

Yesterday I picked up the only GF4 ti I could find. I had the money and was ready to buy a 4600, but only found a single store that even had a TI in stock
here in KC. So I ended up with a PNY Ti4400. Although my Radeon LE served me well for the time that I used it, after running some of my favorite games
at higher resolutions with AA there is certainly no going back.

This is my first Nvidia card and I was worried about 2d, but it looks every bit as good as my radeon and my Matrox G450 in my other computer. I really can't see
a difference.

But the 3d is just awesome. Descent 3 looked good before, but at 1280 W/ 4Xs AA it is beautiful. No jaggies and all those straight lines on walls and robots
look perfectly straight. Mechwarrior 4 looks amazing too. I could never run AA on my previous cards without out an unaccaptable performance hit, but after
one day of playing with it you just can't go back. Oh and battlezone II looks better too, although it isn't perfect, it really benifits from AA because it already had
good textures just lots of jaggies.

I havn't benchmarked it, but am very happy and love how it works.

Hey, if you have a 4400 or a 4600 try playing UT with the High Resolution textures. I found a weird "bug". The flags aren't visible in capture the flag. Still playing with it but it seems weird!

Damn I CANT WAIT to get mine! I usually just run everything at 800x600 anyhow, because to me, it looks just as good in games as 1280x1024 does. I'll probaly be running at 800x600 with everything turned up in every game. Can't wait!! Next week baby!

You know what looks best to you, but if you get one of these cards you owe it to yourself to at least try a higher res.

What card do you have now? Monitor size?

No I haven't. I have been too busy playing games and demo. Plus, the VisionTek card did NOT ship with the attachment.

So what was your 3DMark2001SE score before and after? I only gained about 1400 points going from a Ti 500 to the 4600. My score with the 4600 is sitting around 8800. I think my CPU is the reason I can't get a better score. However, I due plan on dropping a 2.0 Ghz Northwood in soon.

With EVERYTHING the same but my GeForce2 Ultra (stock setting), I got 4849

With EVERYTHING the same but my GeForce4 Ti4600 (stock setting), I got 8755

Yeah my Ti500 is quite long too. My IDE cables arch right above it as they connect to their drives.

I have just a 17" monitor and a GeForce2 MX, one of those BEFORE they started with the 200/400 flavors of the MX. I'm running it on a T-Bird 800 right now.

Uh, what kind of games do you play? Because 1280x1024 has almost 3 times as many pixels on screen as 800x600. So the difference is VERY striking. Maybe your monitor doesn't support higher resolutions (I don't know how that would be possible, almost all support at least 1024x768 but...)

No. Not yet. I have overclocked every processor that I have had since the P2 350, but I have not overclocked my XP yet. I have overclocked every video card I have had since my Voodoo 2, but I have not overclocked my GF4 4600 yet.

i get around 9,100 on my non oced GF4Ti4600.. that i only paid 130 bucks for hahaha... might be switching from my current rig (see sig for stats) to a 1.6a soon though

Wow, I am stunned by reading this thread. I can't believe people can afford (and justify) an upgrade from a geforce 3 ti500 to a geforce 4 4600. I wish I could swallow the 400 dollar price tag. I'll just go in my corner with my old geforce 2 gts.

I think you need to look a little harder at your screen. The difference between 1280 x 960 and 800 x 600 is like night and day.
