I was waiting for a Geforce 2 Ultra to upgrade to a Ti4600 as that is what I have currently got
So cmaMath, you think it is a worthwhile upgrade? You say you gained 4000 3DMarks, but this does not worry me, I am more interested in the games themselves. What resolution were/are you running at?
I've thought about this lately. I've been thinking about trying something new this year. Upgrade to the latest and greatest as soon as it comes out and sell the old stuff on Ebay while it still gets a halfway decent price. I think that over the long run it's cheaper than upgrading only once a year or every 18 months and then getting pennies for the old junk on ebay.

thats what I do, but I don't always ge the latest and the greatest. I waiting to long on upgrading my GF2 last time and only got 50 for a card I paid 300 for.
$400 is a big chunk of change. I just earn an extra $750 this last month for some extra work I did, so I am using it to pay for my GeForce 4 (plus I am trying to sell my GeForce2 Ultra currently).
I really like the fps and image quality. In Q3 based games the performance is UN-believable!
Was it worth it? For me yes. For someone else, maybe not.
<< Wow, I am stunned by reading this thread. I can't believe people can afford (and justify) an upgrade from a geforce 3 ti500 to a geforce 4 4600. I wish I could swallow the 400 dollar price tag. I'll just go in my corner with my old geforce 2 gts. >>
Well it's a hobby just like anything else... look at how many people blow over $1000 on new alloy wheels or an exhaust for their car... look at how many spend thousands going on vacation.
I make good money and upgrading to the latest video card every year (along with a few other hardware upgrades) is my little treat to myself... even saying that, I will only be upgrading from my GF3 to a TI4400. I have a good excuse, my brother sorely needs an upgrade from his Voodoo3... he will inherit the GF3.
With EVERYTHING the same but my GeForce4 Ti4600 (stock setting), I got 8755
cmaMath, u should get more...
my current system is xp 1900+ (1.6ghz ) on abit kr7a + 768 corsair ddr ram + leadtek gf3ti500... no overlock vid card and cpu... i got 8600 mark for 3dmark2001SE.. dont think because u use sdram u get the low score
han888, a sort of off-topic question, what's your temperatures? I'm interested because I just built a machine almost the same as yours (except I got 1800+), and would like to know whether I'm running too hot (50/56C idle/loaded).
I'd appreciate it.
I think so. I was looking at the NEW PC Gamer magazine and on their P$ 2GHz machine, they got about 8500, too. I have seen reports of 9000+ on many DDR systems, so I think that is the main bottleneck. I am looking at DDR mobos, but I want a better deal than the prices of DDR right now.

Imho, the trick to upgrading is do it while you can still get a good price for your old stuff. For example, I'm upgrading from an original Visiontek GF3 to a GF4 ti 4600 for a $154.00. The new card is $354.00 including shipping minus the $200.00 I have my GF3 sold for. I don't have any problems with spending a $150-$200.00 a year for a top end video card.
Just finished playing a couple of hours of Q3 at 1600x1200 with everything maxxed out and cg_shadows set to "3" (draws a full figure shadow for all players) looks great and I was able to do much better with the rail gun than I could before
