My gf is moving into an apt with me but she has bad credit

Me and my gf are relocating and wanted to move into an apartment together. However, she has bad credit (bankruptcy) and my credit is fine. If they know she is living with me do they still have to put her on the lease even if I am the main one? And if they did would I not be approved because of her?

She lives with me in my old city, and she just moved in there and we did not really tell them anything. Everything has been fine though, management has not been very nosey into the whole situation.

We looked at a couple places yesterday, she came with me and I said I was gonna be living alone. I would like to avoid doing this and just tell the truth.

But since your credit is fine, I don't see why her bankruptcy will matter. Just tell them.

im 24, she is 22. She made really dumb mistakes in the past and they wont be repeated as long as we are together. We have been together for a year.

I was wondering the same thing. This is highly unusual, and it would raise a red flag for me. Be very careful. Anyone who's been that financially irresponsible needs to be kept on a tight leash.

I could see 22 and a bankruptcy, you can usually get your own credit card at 18. It doesn't take long to screw up badly with credit cards, I could probably ruin my credit in a year or so and be forced to go bankrupt.

To the OP, it shouldn't matter. My current roomate had zero credit and I have stellar credit. We got an apartment just fine.

Well, he didn't create this thread for us to judge his girlfriend. I was just curious, which is why I asked.

I advise him not to co-sign any loans with her for awhile, other than that, she could very well be a great girl that learnt financial responsiblity the hard way. I think bankruptcy clears up in 7 years if I'm not mistaken, so by the time she is 30 it won't haunt them any more.

It wont matter, as long as your credit is good enough. The most important thing they look for is income, even if she had bad credit but could prove she gets an ok pay check they'd give her a place.

Put her on the lease, its the law and it will makes things easier in case of an emergency or something.

You don't need too put her on the lease... Since, she's your g/f I would doubt that she would stiff you on the rent...but if it makes u feel better you can draw up a simple contract between her and you.


With her BK they will find ways to assess you fees.

It shouldnt matter. If just one of you can qualify for the love shack its all good. Speaking of which, good luck with the hookup but remember someones gonna try to change somebody. Hopefully your good money management rubs off on her, otherwise keep her number handy for future reference but let her go.

Don't lie. We put a clause in our contracts that another person can only stay for 2 weeks with landlord approval. If I found out that another person was living there, I would confront the person. Trust me, you want to be on your landlord's good side. Lying about something like that will hurt you in the long run.
