I would disagree--more sport than sporty...

[Edit] In fact, I would say the Miata is more of a sports car by the traditional definition than the majority of cars Americans today call sports cars.

Miata = :thumbsdown:

Yep. Not many people "get" the concept of the roadster...I disagree with what you are saying but respect your opinion

Oh that?s a good one, referring to his Miata as a sports car!

To the OP, thanks for making me laugh, I needed it!

Yeah, no kidding.

Its a shame when a lightweight 2 seater RWD roadster with a 4 wheel independent suspension isn't considered a sports car.

I guess to most people if it doesn't have 200+ HP, its not a sports car .

Yup and I think thats the only aspect that makes the miata hard to respect.

The pound (avoirdupois) or international pound, abbreviation "lb" or sometimes # in the United States, is the mass unit defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms (or 453.59237 grams)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_sign
The symbol is traditionally called the pound sign in the US. It derives from a series of abbreviations for pound avoirdupois, a unit of weight.

Its traditional commercial use was such that when it followed a number, it was to be read as 'pounds': 5# of sugar.

Exotics are a subset of sports car, sure.

Not only is a Miata a pure sports car (as opposed to sporty), it may just be the definitive sports car currently in production in the US.

You think the corvette is an exotic? Hardly the case, nor is the viper. The NSX might be a little over priced, but not exotic.

There is a slight price difference between the Miata and your cars listed .

Funny thing is, the only difference between all of those "sports cars" you mentioned and the Miata is the fact they have huge gobs of power.

All have a 4 wheel independent suspension, all are 2 seaters, all have 4 wheel disc brakes, all are RWD, and all are generally considered light weight. The NSX is a MR layout, but thats the only real "different" feature between any of the cars listed.

Just because the car doesn't push out 300+HP doesn't mean its not a sports car. If you look at classic sports cars (espically the british roadsters), you'll understand exactly what the Mazda engineers were trying to accomplish. A great handling, lightweight, RWD roadster with no reliablity issues. That is exactly what they made. If you wanted a Mazda Super Car, and you had the money, you would have bought one of these..

I just think its funny how you say a car that was based off the Lotus Elan isn't considered a sports car.

Oh, lets not even mention the fact that the Miata practically revived the roadster when it was about to die. It defined the formula for all future roadsters (Z3, Z4, S2000, Boxster, Solstice, Sky, etc) we have today. RWD, 4 Wheel Indepedent Suspension, 2 seaters.

Ok. So we're in agreement about the Miata then, right?

All I'm saying is just because some 400-pound lard can throw a baseball and run to first base, doesn?t make him an athlete. And just because the miata is a 2 seater and has 4 wheel independent suspension doesn?t make it a sports car.

Yes it does (and the fact its RWD + Lightweight), and your analogy sucked.

Just because a guy can't hit as many home runs as Barry Bonds doesn't mean he isn't an athlete.

...low, small, rwd, lightweight, driver feel, nimble..

I'm still not convinced you know what a sports car is
