140hp doesn't seem like alot, but you can break the rear end out when accelerating if you really really wanted to. I drive much more conservatively on the street than I do on the course so its not an issue on my daily drive to and from work. I can break it out if I really wanted too, and sometimes it occasionally (and unexpectedly) gets loose, but it isn't an issue.

However, on the autocross, it is a completely different story. The rear end is constantly flying out and traction can sometimes be limited. In a car with such little power, and in a motorsport where keeping your momentum is the key to winning, making sure you're putting most of its available power to the ground is essential. The LSD really does help.

Acaeton...is that the '06 RX-7? I'm sorry, but if you don't think that car is hawt (and going to liberally whip domestic sports-car ass) you're insane.

No, thats just an FD RX-7 (93-95). What gave you the impression that I didn't like the car? I think it looks absolutely fantastic.

Yeah people like this (you perhaps?) aren't concerned with being 'fast' as long as they can pick off the little guys. You say quarter mile times don't matter, that balance and handling are everything, yet you rev at stop lights and pick on people who you KNOW have half the car that you have at stop lights and straight roads.

Once somebody your own size finally schools you, you play down power and speed and say its all about twisties and handling and argue that your 175 HP car could take a 700 HP car if you "threw some twisties in there"

I've heard it over and over and over again

You'll never hear someone with a BMW complaining about about twisties as long as they are wasting Hondas and Toyotas on a straight run from a stop (ie: 1/4 mile), but smoke their asss with a vette or a mustang and suddenly they cry about twisties.

Oh yes, because you know exactly how I live:roll: Come to think of it, I don't believe I've ever "revved" at a stoplight. Furthermore, I've never even attempted to make the claim that I can beat some 700hp monster in the twisties. Unlike you, I don't feel the need to showoff by racing cars I know are slower. I wonder why you're getting so defensive. Sheesh man, just accept that a lot of people, myself included, don't care about having a 10 second car.

I must apologize, nothing personal. I just get extremely annoyed when someone starts talking about "twisties" just because it?s the oldest excuse in the book. Every time someone I see someone with a weak car try to take someone from a light (ie: drag race, 1/4 mile) it's only after getting wasted that they say 1/4 miles times don't mean anything and start crying about "throw some twisties in there" If they knew their car wasn?t good off the line or that 1/4 mile isn?t everything, why do they happily do it to people with lesser cars until someone finally gives them a taste of their own?

To each their own as far as preferences go, but I tire of people who buy something, brag that they can take me off a light, get their asses handed to them, and then complain there were no ?twisties.? If they can't do straights, then don't challenge people to straights, it's as simple as that.

Drag raced at a NHRA track??

Lol, no. It's pointless in a Miata.

It's easy to get wheel spin in 1st, and a little slip in 2nd.

definately 'sporty', not 'sport'.

It's cute, the girls like it, and slower than death. Hence, sporty.

I'm sure any circa 1986 pontiac 6000 wagon could stomp that thing 0-60 as well....yippee.

My piece of junk 94 probe GT would tear that Miata up, whether straight line, twisty road, or track...so I guess the PGT is a sports car too?

Funny thing is, the only difference between all of those "sports cars" you mentioned and the Miata is the fact they have huge gobs of power.

All have a 4 wheel independent suspension, all are 2 seaters, all have 4 wheel disc brakes, all are RWD, and all are generally considered light weight. The NSX is a MR layout, but thats the only real "different" feature between any of the cars listed.

Just because the car doesn't push out 300+HP doesn't mean its not a sports car. If you look at classic sports cars (espically the british roadsters), you'll understand exactly what the Mazda engineers were trying to accomplish. A great handling, lightweight, RWD roadster with no reliablity issues. That is exactly what they made. If you wanted a Mazda Super Car, and you had the money, you would have bought one of these..

I just think its funny how you say a car that was based off the Lotus Elan isn't considered a sports car.

Oh, lets not even mention the fact that the Miata practically revived the roadster when it was about to die. It defined the formula for all future roadsters (Z3, Z4, S2000, Boxster, Solstice, Sky, etc) we have today. RWD, 4 Wheel Indepedent Suspension, 2 seaters.

Wow, total pwnage.

I  my '99 Miata.

OP, those new subbies are fast, so don't worry about it. The Miata definitely has some heart and soul, and your gf can't touch that.

Ha ha. Yes, not getting taken advantage of when someone revs on you at a stop light. That's exactly what sports cars are all about

This is gonna blow a lot of people's minds, but being a "sports car" does not have a majority interest in racing or being faster than the other guy

So I guess the Lotus Elise with 190 hp doesn't count, huh?

Hey I never said a car couldn't LOOK sporty and still not be a sports car right?

Wow. You're an idiot.

Isn't the Forester considered a small SUV, not a station wagon?

I doubt most of those things. They run very very similar quarter mile/0-60 times (low 16 1/4, high 7 second 0-60s), but the similarity ends there. No FWD car in the world would out handle a Miata. The only one that would come close would be an ITR.

Regarding the track performance, we all know that the Ford Probe is tearing up top times of the day @ track events. FWD cars have the tendancy to understeer causing very slow entry and exit speeds. Sorry to burst your bubble, but a Ford Probe wouldn't even come close to a Miata on a race track.

Well from what I know about the ford probe GT stock (v6), for one thing is that it has about 164 hp at 5400rpm. The MazdaSpeed miata, has 178 hp, stock (turbo). The Ford Probe GT is also 2921 lbs stock, where as the MSM is 2529lbs stock.

So I'd say, the MSM would tear your car up.

And his car, being the NA, (popup headlights version) wouldn't be in the same class as your car, since your car, is a v6 and his is a 4-cylinder ... 164 vs 128 hp ... I don't think so -_-

Actually my few racing stories are rather funny. Once I was just at a stoplight next to an '04 E320. I just waited at the light...no revving, nothing. Light turns green and the guy takes off. I was like wtf, so I take off after him. I think he was a bit surprised when he didn't smoke the little Honda next to him (car i'm selling/sold). Not that running a low 15 is anything to brag about.....but it is when the car runs low/mid 16's stock.

Another time, I happened to be lined up next to an E36 M3. Again, I didn't make any attempt and challenging him to a race. Light turns green and I took off anyway since its fun. Guy in the M3 stalls it so I just get off the gas. When he gets going again he comes up fast behind me so I nail it and he can't lose me.

Ah well, good times. I guess I just enjoy messing with people who think they have fast cars I know that guy in the IS300 was surprised but that was some highspeed racing on the freeway.
