sure. a Forester XT is faster than a mustang V8.
Fixed.

Yeah it is pathetic. The GT has had 260 HP from a V8 and you can get a damn Nissan with that much power out of a FWD V6! My fiancee is looking at a 2005 Toyota Avalon with 280 HP from a V6... doesn't make the regular or GT mustangs all that impressive.

At least the new GT has 300 HP, it's a start.

But I am still of the opinion that the only real Mustang left in the world is the Cobra. The other models have gone down market to fullfill the masses.

Hey! At least we can agree on that.

Mustang = weak.

The last one I liked was the Cobra R of a few years ago. That sucker was bad@ss.

Heh yeah.

Mustang = weak barbie car
GT = schooled by Nissan V6s
Cobra = now we're talking (the ?03 stock has 390 HP and the ?07 will have 450+)
'03 Cobra with a Kenne Bell = hold on for dear life and don?t step on it without your head fully planted into the seat first
?07 Shelby Cobra GTR = omfg

I really wish Ford would make a modern 32 valve DOHC 351 engine and put to rest the criticism of their modular engines. They are great engines, as the 281 ci making 700 HP can testify to. But imagine a DOHC 351 with that Kenne Bell on it? *drool*

I?m not even a Ford fan really, I always despised mustangs for the given reasons, not to mention the fact that everyone and their sister has one. But I just couldn?t ignore the recent Cobras, and the Ford enthusiast performance after market is easily the largest. I?ve heard a lot of talk about the Cobras and many die hard Ford haters in the LS1 community have admitted that Ford has finally done it right and given the modern mustang (Cobra) some justice.

And contrary to popular belief American cars can handle just as well as any foreign cars, though admittedly it?s rarer, and not standard as on most Japanese or European cars.

For example the '03 Cobra has dual wishbone independent rear suspension, coil over struts, limited slip differential, 4 wheel anti lock disk brakes, traction control, etc. But as I said in my last statement, this is only the rare Cobra, and not the general V6 or GT mustangs. And even then it took them a long ass time to catch up to modern trends and add all that.

I've taken plenty of clover leafs and twisties doing 60+ without so much as a peep. Obviously you can't step on it with 700 HP at the wheels, but then again what car CAN and not loose control? It's obviously not as much an issue in "better handling" cars that only have 160 HP to begin with, so to say a car automatically can't handle just because it has insane power; people are admitting they haven?t driven enough cars to share their input on the subject. Take any "better handling" foreign car and give it 500+ HP and you'll also have problems keeping it fast in the corners.

All cars obey the same laws of physics.

you phucken n00bs, miata is a sportscar. Mazdaspeed miatas = very quick.

there's no way bulky american muscles can handle as good as the little roadster. Afterall it was designed for handling and compact not for power in a gt body.

and your girlfriend drives a s4 wagon, gg to you. My teacher drives a s4 wagon and she can rape her husband's a4 anyday.

weight, the is ultimate enemy. Actually 500 hp nsx can outhandle ferraris, you lie!

and a 600 hp supra should weigh about the same as ur 500 hp cobra and they should have the same handling. As you can see, power doesn't affect handling; unless you don't know how to handle the power.

if you give miata 500 hp with only 2400 lbs, i doubt ur cobra can keep up...

Right all those wins that the '05 stang have been racking up in Grand Am Races this year are purely coincidental

That would be some power to weight ratio. I just think there needs to be some miminum threshold for speed before something can be called a sports car, or else you look like an asshat. It doesn't need to be ripping Mustang GT's or anything, but it can't be gettinng outrun by $300 1987 Dodge Omni's either. A Miata with ~ 150 hp would be good enough, IMO, and I'd call that a sports car.

Look like an asshat where? While getting beat while drag racing from a stop light? Trust me, both parties involved look like asshats there...

And one more time, drag racing has precious little to do with a car's designation as a sports car...

Anyway, still sucks to get beat by a wagon, but, it's not like the old days when wagons where notoriously slow.

what about 93 and 94 Rx-7 they pwm and they are made by mazda

OP is talking about Miata, not Mazda in general.

To the OP, thanks for making me laugh, I needed it!

Ha ha. Someone doesn't know what a sports car is

These are sports cars

This is sporty, not a sports car.

Exotics are a subset of sports car, sure.

Not only is a Miata a pure sports car (as opposed to sporty), it may just be the definitive sports car currently in production in the US.
A dodge viper isn't an exotic. it's a muscle car.

There is enough room for another thread entirely, but I was of the impression that one of the more important factors driving the muscle car age (late 60s/early 70s) was that they were decently inexpensive--something the Viper isn't...

still doesn't change the fact that a bulky american car can't handle better than a small roadster.

True..smaller wheelbase, less weight make a roadster nimbler, especially around corners.
But I won't back down if challenged

Agreed. Im pretty sure an SUV can beat that thing off the line. Im also pretty sure my Camry ('99) could kill that thing. I've driven one and it feels like a go-cart/golf-cart, no get up and go.

The RX-8 is more of a man car and a helluva lot better of a sports car, and it doesn't have a great deal of horses. Just, the miata isn't a great car for racing, more of a joy riding car.

I don't know. S4's are pretty fast, also very expensive. The fastest car I've probably been in is a new vette or M3.

No, I was laughing at you. The Camry has got to the be the slowest car I've driven. My parents have one and even with a 5-speed its horribly slow.

a few terms the early posters were confusing

sporty
sports car
race car
muscle car

the miata isnt meant to be a muscle or a race car, its just meant to be a sports car. Its a small roadster, light weight, handles well, etc....

it doesnt have to be a muscle car to be a sports car.... in fact often the two are mutually exclusive.

i remember a few weeks ago i was talking to a friend, and a miata passed by...i just said i wanna get one of those, but in white, and she didn't say anything..then i'm like yeah, but a lot of people think its a chick's car. Almost immediately she agrees with that statement, and says its ugly...and that I should never get a white car as its a chick's color.

yesterday i was looking at a '98 240sx se, and showed my sister a pic of it...she said it was fugly...

my point? drive whatever the fvck you want to drive, and fvck anyone who has a problem with that. This car is still on the "list of cars I must own," along with the impreza and 240sx.

Miata = awesome track/autoX car
240sx = awesome drift car
impreza = awesome awd car (traction!)

The same can be said about anyone who cares so much about what other people think to not drive a car they really enjoy

Lol. What year is your parents Camry? I have driven much slower cars then a camry. I guess you haven't driven some really bad four cylinder cars made by Kia,Saturn,etc. Camry is far from all that crap. Maybe it was the person driving it.

It's all relative. When I first bought my Camry (V6, DOHC, 24V) I thought it was damn peppy and pretty responsive compared to the Escort I used to drive. Now when I drive it, it feels like it has no pickup what so ever compared to my Mustang. I'm sure if I tried a Viper or something, the 'stang would feel like a slug.
