My Gigabyte R9 390 Overclock

Just wanted to share some info on my overclock of my new R9 390 from Gigabyte. As most of you know, the Gigabyte R9 390's have locked voltages but I was pretty happy with the overclock regardless of it having a locked voltage. I bought this card already knowing of the locked voltages and opted for the G1 series of their R9 390's.

Anyways, I wanted to post this before i go, I won't be around to reply back as i am going out of town but for anyone interested in what a Gigabyte R9 390 G1 Edition can do even with locked voltages here you go, although some of it has to do with a per card basis, its not guaranteed every card. Also Keep in mind, i could of went further but opted to stay here and not push it any further. In fact i only did this to see what the card could do, as right now i have no desire or reason to keep it overclocked, maybe down the road i might OC it to get a bit more performance out of it but for now..no reason other than to see what i could do.

So i basically went as far as 1125mhz core/1625mhz memory with simply raising the Power Limit 10%, that's all. I left this run on GPU-Z's overclock testing for 30 minutes and played Battlefield 4, Crysis 3 and COD BOPs3 for a few hours non-stop switching between games during these few hours while keeping the card running with the OC. It's nice and stable and obviously could do a bit more but this is about as far as i feel i would want to go in the future.

I was not one of the "most" so thanks for the info.

Have fun with it mate.

Both my 970 and 7950 are Gigabyte ones. Damn good coolers. Unfortunately I had to pick a 7950 model that was voltage locked as well, lol. Still it can OC to 1.1Ghz which is a pretty good operating frequency considering the original 7950s were running at 800Mhz iirc.

Wow... If you hadn't responded pso I would have never known lol. I looked through his pics for info on voltage for awhile too. That's weird they'd lock voltage.

That's really good. My R9 390 can only OC to 1040 on the core without a voltage bump and to get to 1100 on the core a mV+100 bump in Afterburner is a necessity.

Did you notice any FPS changes while you played those games? Also, couldn't you just flash the card and unlock those voltages?

Got my Sapphire 390 (with backplate) today, and seeing this post "inspired" me to OC it straight out of the box. How'd I do?

For those of you who are image-impaired - 1170/1800 (+12.5%/+20%) on stock volts. ASIC 73.2%, for what it's worth.

Kinda suspicious about the max memory clock, seems a tad too high to be true. No artifacting in Heaven, though, and I haven't run into any issues yet in FO4 or GTA5 (the system does crap itself at 1820 MHz). Gonna try some other games in a bit to see what happens.

I'm pretty satisfied overall. OP, lemme know if you wanna do some comparison tests or benches or something. I'm interested in your VRM temps if you have them handy, too; you've got some nice temps there.

What about the Gigabyte warranty?

Will they know? Will I loose warranty if I up my Gaming G1 Windforce to 1125 MHz?

They generally won't know or care. It won't be a problem unless you go overboard and somehow manage to damage the card.

Moey, you might want to even try moderate overclocking and undervolting. I have my XFX 390 set to 1100/1625 with -20mv.

What brand?

I'll add my data for stock voltage:

R9 295X2 GPU 1 = 1125mhz ASIC 76.1%

R9 295X2 GPU 2 = 1125mhz ASIC 80.6% (This GPU can probably overclock more)

XFX R9 390 XXX OC = 1165mhz ASIC 79.6%

The R9 390 can hit 1220mhz with + 0.100mV (max voltage overvolt)*.

I run all 3 loaded to 100% 24/7. I don't want to overvolt them for another 5% increase in clocks as I want to be able to resell them later, which to me means I won't push them to the absolute max. *If I was just gaming 2-3 hours a day, or just running benchmarks for e-peen, then sure*.

That's some nice results.

Rare to see Hawaii above 1.2ghz actually. All of my R290s and R290X have been around the 1.15 to 1.175ghz mark, with one hitting 1.2ghz.
