Heater Blanket with a quilt over top to hold more heat in. Everyone should have a good heater blanket on hand...and a Carhart extreme coat and bibs.
Heated mattress pad is where it's at. Heat is distributed uniformly. Roll over and you're always in a nice new warm area - I end up kicking the covers off half of the time; keeping it at 6; it goes up to 19.

OP: if you live near me, I can lend you a spare wood stove & give you half a cord of firewood or whatever you can carry in your trunk. I'm a little more prepared for the heat going out - 2 pellet stoves, a rice coal stove, and a wood stove, plus generator in case of loss of power (wood stove doesn't need power).

Speaking of heat, I really want to put a wood stove in as backup or even supplementary heat source some day. Chopping wood and kindling is also fun. Just need to buy a chainsaw. A pickup truck would be nice too but trunk of my car will have to do. Can put logs in the back seat too then just cut them up smaller at home. To follow proper good neighbour protocol this would have to be done at 4am.

The wind was blowing very strong and was blowing right into the exhaust. Every time the furnace started it would make a loud banging sound.

Gas furnace? The pilot light probably blew out. Happens to mine once every year or two.

Pilot light? How old would a gas furnace have to be to have a pilot light?

Was having trouble with our furnace over January into February. Every time the main blower kicked on and cycled off, would hear clunking/thumping. Supply ducts are in slab. Couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from precisely, but it got more consistent. Eventually got to the point where I noticed the thermostat resetting and checked the furnace and it was throwing an error.

Some searching and checking...it couldn't be.

Changed the filter (only 2.5 months old, have the thermostat programmed to remind me at 3 months) and problem solved.

First winter in the place. Furnace is from 91 or 92 iirc. It's near the top of the list. :hmm:

the 1990s
really depends on the type of furnace
ours had them before we changed the system, now it used an inline compact sparker thing

the HVAC unit on the 3rd floor may actually still have a pilot and it was put in in the 2ks

Had a heater technician come to the apartment yesterday and he fixed the issue.

There were wires that were rubbing against each other and this is what caused the issue. The gas heater is from the mid-80s so it's quite old.

Damn. Would've figured they would have electronic ignition by then.

Still looking at our options here. Initial cost probably prohibits geothermal heat pump, but damn that would be fly.

A lot of it depends on if we can feasibly reroof and condition our attic. We are on a slab. Want to basically convert the attic into crawl space for utilities (except for drainage). Could put a furnace up there if that was the case (direct venting to outdoors). Or perhaps a boiler/instant water heater dual use combo on the first floor. Also need to save room (smaller ranch, want to get washer/dryer the F out of kitchen).

Money pit...
