they had a fire burning 24/7 and slept right next to it under a shit ton of layers in groups for group warmth

i feel sorry for the person at the end of the group who wasn't snuggled between flesh and ass exposed to the cold.

I'd loop Unigine Heaven with LinX running in the background and stay in my computer room.

That happened to me last year when it was one of the coldest days of the year. Just put on some blankets and go buy a space heater and call the landlord asap.

It sounds like one of the bearings on the blower fan may have gone bad, in which case they are fairly simple to replace. If you are mechanically inclined, shut the power to the furnace off and remove the cover on the blower fan and try turning it and moving it up and down by hand. There should be very little to no play in the fan and it should turn smoothly. If not, remove the offending bearing and take it to your local hardware store or hvac supply and they should be able to match it up. You are more likely to find this part at a locally owned hardwars store, such as an ace hardware, than at the big box stores like home depot or lowes.

I read the thread title as my heart broke due to the weather being too cold.

Disappointed.

That, and people like the OP would have died of dysentery while they were children. They wouldn't have to put up with such bullshit.

OP, if you haven't froze to death yet...and we can still hold out hope for that...

Build a fire in your living room. No firewood? Don't sweat it. Chop up your furniture, your cupboards and cabinets...ANY kind of wood will suffice. BUILD IT BIG so it doesn't go out too quickly.

If wind was blowing in the pipe maybe it was putting the flame out. Is it ABS pipes going out? See if you can put some kind of temporary shield. Though, it's the first time I hear of this being an issue, I think the modern closed system furnaces have ways to deal with the wind. The pipes also bend in a way that wind should not be easily going in.

I would just call an hvac company to come check it out.

If the exhaust line is where the wind is coming in from you can cut it inside the house and let the exhaust go in the house, it will further warm you up. You might feel a little sleepy.

Heater Blanket with a quilt over top to hold more heat in. Everyone should have a good heater blanket on hand...and a Carhart extreme coat and bibs.

The heater went out last night. Its freezing. 45 degrees and quickly dropping. What can I do?

I'm dying. God, I'm dying it's so cold.
My place is always 40F at night and I could care less.

But yes, set everything on fire! Might as well buy some marshmallow too

Watch for bursting pipes if you let it drop that low though. It could be colder where the pipes are. I tend to let my house drop to about 12C (53F) when I'm not home, or sleeping. Eventually I want to add sensors where the pipes are so I can let it drop even lower. Before the natural gas price hike last year I was able to keep my bill at $95/mo with my thermostat system.

Get out of the basement to your parent's room and snuggle up with them.

Start burning things. I suggest your pc/laptop/router first.
