My HOA has gone off the deep end... Apparently I can't let my grill cool down anymore.

Most HOA issues are set by vote, if you don't get involved you rely on other's voting.

Even that doesn't always help. The HOA where my parents live has been going steadily down hill over the last 12 years. The stupid people now out number the smart ones as the smart ones got too fed up and left. My parents would have left by now except that my dad is retiring next year and then they will move somewhere warmer.

As an example they spent $12,000 on speed bumps for the subdivision without making sure they met state guidlines. They then had to pay $16,000 for removal and patching when they found out that they vilotated state codes.

Are you kidding me? I'd tell them to kindly go fuck themselves. It's your house-- if you want to leave your grill uncovered, covered, upside down, sideways, knocked over, spray painted with a giant penis on it, that's your right. As long as you're not renting a condo or something, no one has any right to tell you what you can / can't do on your own property (within logical reason, obviously). What are they going to do if they fine you and you don't pay? Angry mob with pitchforks?

Seriously. I know they have local authority like that of a township or something, but I'd love to see the HOA take you to court over something ridiculous like that.

HoA can put a lien on his house and get him kicked out of his property. HoAs are too strong in America

I'm sure some people are thinking "ha ha ha! Stupid HOA!" But, you have to remember how the HOA is going to deal with it. "Sorry, everyone, we have to increase your dues by $100 to pay for the removal of the speed bumps.

Get rich quick scheme for the OP: Put the cover on while the grill is really hot. Be careful not to get burnt. Oh no! You burned yourself as a result of being forced to follow their rule, else get fined. Sue! It's the American way! (Check your HOA rules, I'm sure you're forbidden from suing them too.)

HOA...that stands for HOSTAGE Owners Association. With the emphasis on ASS. <rimshot>
There is nothing I love more than HOA bashing.

Seriously, ask for written clarification of policy regarding Cool -Off time, so you can have it when it catches fire due to their unreasonable and unsafe policies.
Pay some paralegal to write it up in Legal-ese to add some "punch".
Take it as seriously as you can, becase#1. Fire Prevention is no laughing matter and #2. INSURANCE costs are borne ( amortized) by everyone, especially within an HOA development.
THAT's their legal hat hook, make it yours as well.

Good luck, I say make their 'Good-Old-Boy' meeting a little more interesting.

Not all HOAs are as unreasonable as aphex's. The only HOA stories you read on the internet are the bad ones.
You will need to supply your own proof of that conjecture.
Mine was as bad if not worse. I had no idea what I was getting into.
I recommend that anyone thinking of purchasing in one, hold off and go to a meeting or two to see who the players are.

So I'm at 100% negative for personal experience, and 0% for the polar opposite.

Unless you're playing with "cards" of your own, you're not in the game.

HOA in my community only intervenes when there are specific and numerous complaints from neighbors, or when if they just happen to observe something in glaring violation. Such as when the homeowner several houses down from me allowed his un-landscaped back lawn turn in to a two-story forest of weeds and tumble-brush.

OTOH, a substantial amount of our fees go towards community improvements, rec center, entertainment (outdoor movie), 7/4 fireworks, etc...

But we're not in townhouses, or Florida, so...*shrug*

Move now before you give any more money to people that have nothing better to do than tell you how to live in the home you are paying for.

There is no way I could live there. A notice like that would have me pulling out my grill, parking it on the front lawn and cooking the most obnoxious smelling food I could think of.

Thank god my townhouse is part of a 2-unit "association" so there's no BS with meetings and rules. If we need something to happen we just knock on each other's door and talk.

Unluckily for the asshat I was following the fire code to the letter (with a fire extinguisher standing by).

Wow it's a good thing you are around to call the Fire Department on them, god knows what could happen. You are an asshole; I don't blame them for being pissed at you.

All it takes is one crazy man to go ape shit on one HOA and the madness will stop. Imagine some stupid overzealous HOA members being slaughtered, plaster all over the news... The fat stupid whinny and nosy bitches of HOAs will simmer down after that.

The story about HOA's trying to preserve property values is bullshit.
They let illegal aliens move in all the time.

Make a big sign "COVER WILL BE REPLACED WHEN GRILL HAS COOLED. POTENTIAL HOMEOWNERS PLEASE LOOK AWAY" and set it out next to the grill until you put the cover back on.

Rest assured that the next time I use my grill, I will very quickly put the cover on so as not to violate the letter of the law. Please let me know to what address and to whom I should send the ruined grill and bill for replacement when doing so melts the cover to the grill due to the high heat generated by fire and retained by metal. If you don't wish to be liable for my property damages, then enforce the spirit of the regulation by allowing me to let the grill cool after use, which is what I was doing on the day in question."

QFT...how about letting them know or the landlord instead of dragging the FD out.

Like other have said, you chose to live in a HOA. There are homes without HOA's everywhere and you chose to live in a HOA so you suffer the consequences.
