Go see it now and judge for yourself. It's the same CGI and the same class acting as in LOTR. You either like the movies or you don't. This crap about nitpicking every little thing in the movie is annoying. It is by far the best movie of the year and second to LOTR overall.

This. The whining in this thread is tiresome.

Loved the opening scene with Bilbo and Gandalf, nearly word for word right out of the book. Loved the dinner scene with the dwarves and both songs. That whole sequence is just incredibly well done. Loved the Erebor scene showing when Smaug invaded. The grandeur and majesty of the kingdom was much greater than I pictured from the book. Loved, loved, loved the White Council scene showing the interaction and conflicting personalities of all those major characters. And of course the highlight was the Riddles in the Dark scene. If you didn't love that, then I don't know what to say.

Most importantly, you get to know the personalities and motivations of the characters. The dwarves weren't just interchangeable characters, they each had distinct personalities (Dwalin and Dori being my favorites).

Sure some of the CGI was overdone, but what were you expecting? People need to chill out, it was a great flick.

Flying ring wraiths would have seen and probably eaten them.

Fly at night, or in the cloud cover.

At one point, didn't Gandalf hold them back with his glowing staff?

So they could have just used eagles at the begging to drop the ring in the volcano.

He wasn't Gandalf the White in the beginning. And I'm pretty sure the ring wraiths have no trouble seeing at night.

Some might ask why they won't just use the eagles as a taxi service to the Lonely Mountain. In the novel (The Hobbit) it's explained that the eagles want to avoid humans (and probably elves, etc.) for fear of being shot at with arrows. Apparently they enjoy purloining people's livestock, which makes them a target.

I wonder if Beorn will be in the next movie.

So, I started rereading The Hobbit a few weeks ago in little bits here and there (for probably the 4th time in 30 years) and went to see the movie tonight. I enjoyed it and I'm glad that there were three hours worth or Middle Earth world to enjoy, but I was disappointed with some aspects of it.

I wasn't real happy with the Jar Jar Binks of a clown wizard Radagast (barely mentioned in any of the books) and his bunny sled. I also would have preferred to have the rock giants throwing stones off in the distance and not be part of a moving mountain. I also don't understand why they didn't leave Rivendale with Gandalf (like they did in the novel).

I would have liked to have seen the "siege of the trees" scene be more faithful to the book. It didn't occur at a cliff (for dramatic effect) and the goblins got to sing a silly song before setting the trees on fire.

Overall, my wife (who's never read the books) and I enjoyed the movie. I'd give it a 7 out of 10, but I'm a fanboi.

i was singing it in my head and was sad it waset in the movie

Fifteen birds in five firtrees,
their feathers were fanned in a fiery breeze!
But, funny little birds, they had no wings!
O what shall we do with the funny little things?
Roast 'em alive, or stew them in a pot;
fry them, boil them and eat them hot?

The movie looks like a mostly unwatchable 3 hour borefest to me. I liked the original LOTRs but this thing is a disaster. I MIGHT redbox this, at the most.

Everything was taken straight from the book. Everything you saw in the movie was lifted right out of the book this time. Not much embellishment.

I was doing some research on Azog, the white Orc...turns out he did actually die in the Battle of Moria and never chased the dwarves during the events in "The Hobbit." So, while the material pulled from "The Hobbit" book might be accurate in the movie, one of the main plot points in the film is not accurate to Middle Earth's history at all (minus the fact that Azog is a real character).

I kind of wish they had left Azog out of the films. It wasn't poorly done or anything (except Azog's CGI...pretty bad), but I felt it detracted more from the move and story than anything.

That said, I did quite like the movie.

We definitely could have lived without Azog and just stuck to the original story. So maybe it would have been 5 minutes shorter without Azog, so what?

I think it would have been at least 20-30 minutes shorter! Unless most of the scenes involving him were actually in "The Hobbit" book and they just added Azog in. Not a big deal either way, just something I wish was done differently.

I'd like to see Peter Jackson release an abridged cut using material from all 3 films, trim it down to either 1 or 2 films of 1.5 hours each or 2 hours each.

Eliminate anything drawn in from appendices, etc. No Radaghast, no Azog... give people an option to watch the film in a more condensed form.

I don't think that's an unreasonable request.

My major gripe was the Jar Jar like character Radagast being tossed in. Okay so they wanted to mention the other parallel plot of the Necromancer and whatnot, but why did they have to make the character so comical?

I think you forgot just how awful JarJar was to make that comparison. I'm not saying Radagast is great but definitely not at that level!

She was upset the the movie "did not finish",

Another movie to close out the first book?

I think back to The Two Towers and how pumped it made me for the next film.

The Hobbit didn't leave me pumped.

It's three movies long:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2014)

I saw it 2D 24fps.
I thought it was great. You have to know going in, it's not epic with serious undertones like LOTR. It was a kids book after all.
My only problem was character development, there almost none. Short intros, and they were off.

Some notable things for me:
-Cate Blanchett is prettier in this movie than she was 10 years ago in LOTR Fellowship.
What a goddess.
-It only occasionally slowed down to show any acting prowess. One of these scenes was the riddles between Gollum and Bilbo. My favorite scene from this movie, I really enjoyed it.
-I am disappointed Peter Jackson and crew decided to make this 3 movies. At the same time, I am glad he did. I'm one of those guys who loves the Extended length editions of the LOTR trilogy and all the bonus features, documentaries, etc. I'll gladly soak up 6 more hours the Hobbit has to offer.

The hobbit IS only one book, so two more movies to finish it out. The buffoon has take a 350 (?) page book and turned it into three 2.5-3 hour movies.

Here is a tip: when I can read the book faster than I can watch the movie, it is too damn long.
