Oh wow how did he make the hobbit book three movies? Oh yeah he didn't. He took the hobbit plus all of the additional material Tolkien created later to tell the entire story. I know it's tough for some to grasp. And that's why the cartoon remains as a fitting alternative.

I grasp the concept just fine, I don't necessarily agree with it.

Maybe with these 3 movies the reverse of the LOTR should be done, where the special editions are actually far shorter than the theatrical this time.

I thought the movie was good - not excellent like the LOTR films. But I really enjoyed it. It does have too much gore though - I brought my little cousin along =/

Saw this last two nights ago... pretty slow at the beginning but it pace really picks up. I thought it was fantastic! CGI on Gollum was marvelous!

Yeah, I kept wondering why we should care about the heros in this movie. Other than Gandalf and Bilbo I really didn't give a shit.

Still, it was entertaining enough and my son wanted to see it so I took him this morning.

By the way, $12 for the two of us. Matinees are the way to go. We didn't get any snacks so it was a bargain really.

No matinees in NYC. So, 2 tix in doucheD are like 35 bucks or so. Definately this movie is NOT worth 35 bux. 15.99 on BR next year maybe.

I saw it in IMAX 3D at 24FPS (HFR not available anywhere in the country). I am very curious to see how a 48 fps movie would look on an IMAX screen because I experienced a fair amount of 'judder' during The Hobbit. (Not sure if it's the right word, but during quick pans and fast camera movements, there is a noticeable 'lag' that I can see)

The movie itself, in a nutshell, is forgettable. Way too long. As I was walking out the theater, nearly every conversation I could hear around me was people complaining about how long the movie was. And this is India, where three-hour-long movies are the norm.

A week later, I can't quite recollect a single 'epic' moment from the movie. While not as terribad as, say, The Matrix sequels or the Star Wars prequels, I would still put it in the same 'pretend it doesn't exist' category if someone new to the series wanted my opinion.

Doesn't it piss you off that my sentences are incomplete? I understand the content is meant to be episodic, but you still need to add some closure of where you plan to take me in the future. It felt like a story inside of a story , and yet again another story, just for the shear sake of time.

And on a serious note, why didn't Gandolf
just call on those huge ass birds to take them where they needed to go in the first place? Did 1000 near death experiences broke him down enough to use them? Or maybe now he has to be a sex slave to whomever the owner of the birds are?

And if you must know how I stand on this movie, I think it was a complete waste of my money and productions.

Finally saw it (in 2D, I'll probably watch it in 3D too).

Ugh, not terrible, but yeah not as good as LotR. Its been a long time since I read the book so its hard to remember what was actually in it and what was added/changed. A lot of stuff felt odd or out of place. Like the go down this little hole, oh we're suddenly in Rivendell! The storm giants were for me as well.

I especially didn't like the ending.

anyone else disappointed at the lack of singing?

Yes especially since they actually did early with the dwarves so I thought they would. Them humming and doing the "over the Misty Mountains cold..." was badass.

Um, what? How was it not clear where they're going to take you? They definitely should have hinted that Mirkwood (where the Necromancer is since they've already spilled those beans) is next, but I mean, WTF? You know the Lonely Mountain is where they're going and that Smaug isn't dead.

Yeah they did a piss poor job of explaining this stuff in the movies. The eagles don't like to meddle in this shit. They owed Gandalf as he helped one of them at some point which is why they rescue them from the trees. The book gives a lot more details. Same with them in the LotR, if I remember right they refused to get involved.

I saw it last night in 3D HFR. Normally I hate the soap opera effect, but man native HFR without artificial smoothing looks great. Panning shots looked awesome and the 3d effect was nice.

The overuse of CGI in the goblin section was iffy, but other than that, I don't know what people are complaining about.

Its a three part movie that adds in TONS of stuff from the appendixes that isn't covered in the main book. Sure it switches stuff around, which I don't completely mind, because it works well for the movie, and is much better storytelling in film format than the book.

Tons of great stuff in the movie. The gollum scene was amazing, damn great acting and tension in that scene. There's so much bitching about stuff that doesn't really need to get bitched about because it came together amazingly. I mean seriously, complaining that the story isn't tied up? Its a damn 3 parter, of course the story won't get tired up.

I saw it last week and didn't notice the length at all which is odd because I normally can't sit for 3 hours at a time. However, I thought the movie was awesome and only had a few beefs with the tree scene and the scene with the bridge falling down.

On a side note, the Star Trek movie looks to be a horrible piece of shit. Seriously? Into Darkness? WTF. Could they be any more vague with the title and plot and show something that makes me want to watch this movie!! We want to see strange new worlds, monsters, aliens, technology, cool shit, not "an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization".

I worded that too vaguely to express my point.I still believe in sequels. So what i really mean is close the story out, begging to the end, but leave it open for interruption enough for a sequel. This movie too me didn't have the three course meal I'm usually use to seeing in a movie. It felt like an introduction of many different elements to which I knew very little about by the end. If I read the books, I would of appreciated it more or followed more closely to the series. It's definitely not a movie for introductory audiences.

I thought it was because the Valar themselves didn't want to get involved (and the eagles are allied with Manwe). Something to do with the destruction caused by the War of Wrath and they didn't think Middle Earth could handle destruction like that again.

Saw it tonight and didn't really care for it. Saw it in 2d because it seems like too long of a movie to see in 3d. Plus I hate that high frame rate interpolation crap.

It was okay but didn't have the same epic feeling as the LOTR movies had. I think the biggest issue for me was a lack of sense of scale. In the LOTR series I actually felt the tremendous distances they traveled. In this one everything seemed like it was happening right down the road for some reason. There's also no drama when you know many of the characters you see can't die because you know they were in the later stories. I was also kind of surprised at how little character development there was despite the length of the movie. I can't name most of the dwarves and didn't really care what happened to them. The other movies stood well without the books, but this one doesn't seem to stand up as well. I felt lost by not reading the books where I never did during the last movies.

I just got back from seeing it.

Keeping in mind I would rate the three LOTR films with scores of 9.5/8.5/9.9...

I would give The Hobbit a score of 8.0/10.0 probably.

LIKES
-Seeing all of our "old friends" again.
-Learning the "back story" to LOTR in detail.
-Similar, "campy" adventure feeling.
-Howard Shore score.
-Gollum/Andy Serkis.
-Gandalf/McKellen.

DISLIKES
-Not as good a "campy" adventure feeling.
-You don't fall "in love" with the Hobbit characters like you do in LOTR, save for McKellen, Holm, Wood, Lee, Blanchett, and the rest of the LOTR cast that appear in The Hobbit. But I consider these characters, save McKellen, to be more or less on the periphery. The "core" characters, led by Martin Freeman, are not as loveable.
-Overall, I found the pacing to be fine but lacks the "build-up" and character development of LOTR.
-I saw the 2D version and I think this version was almost an afterthought. I have the feeling that the 3D/3DHFR versions took priority and then they simply "stripped" tech away to come up with the 2D version. It could have been my theater but I found everything to be horribly out of focus in some way. Unsharp. Dull almost.
