Hi folks. Last Friday, one of housemates tried to pull into the garage, and hit my bike. This incident was captured by a camera I have set up in the garage.

After the bump/collision, she comes to check her work.

We don't really have much of a relationship, other than we live under the same roof. I thought she would have come to talk to me to tell me what happened, but that never happened. Today I got home, and she walked in two minutes behind me. I thought this was the perfect time for her to tell me what happened, but nope; she rattled off about the plumbing under the kitchen sink. At this point is when I realized that she does not plan to tell me, and assume that I don't know about the hit.

I'm not very knowledgable about my bike, outside of changing the oil. As far as I can tell, I don't think there is any damage that I can see. The angle of the pics don't show the point of impact, so I can only assume her bumper hit my rear tire. I guess I am fortunate that she did not knock the bike over (it was on it's kickstand).

Based on what you guys see, do you think I need to worry? Does this look like a situation where I should take it into a shop and ask them to take a look? I did take it out for a spin, and I think I noticed anything weird. But then again, I have no idea what I would be looking for.

Anyway, just wanted to get some of your opinions. Thanks!

It looks like it just moved forward...but you know the angle she hit from the photos - eyeball it really fast to see what she would have hit. Also, it hit a cardboard box...based on how much damage it did to the cardboard box, you could at the very least get an idea of how hard she hit the bike.

Why do you have a camera right there watching the bike? Has there been a problem in past? That's technically a hit and run by law, right? You need to talk to her. You probably need a new roommate.

Based on the GIF, I'd be more concerned if the opposite side of the bike hit anything in the garage. If it's empty space over there, let it go. She clearly didn't do it on purpose and there are more worthwhile things in life to spend energy on.

Does she know about the camera right there watching the garage? I think I'd tell her that you think someone might have bumped your bike, and see if she tells you that she did it?

With that kind of bump, I would be concerned with fasteners\ bodywork mount points breaking or cracking.
If the exhaust is on the right side there is risk that it could have impacted something from the can to the header.

Tell her that you know she hit your bike and that you will let know about any cost arising from the incident.

Obviously this person is of low moral character so there is no need to tip toe around this or worry about "relationships".

Some of you guys are rough. It looks like she hit the tire and she didn't see any damage, so nothing to report. If there is some damage, bring it up to her. Otherwise let it drop.

If you want to check more, the muffler for a dent on the underside. and the fairing on the front left side. From the gif i'd imagine if there is any damage its going to be cosmetic and most likely from whatever she pushed the bike into (and she didn't check that side.)

If she did the proper thing and told him that she hit the bike then I would have had a completely different response.

Having done some rebuilds only to fine that the area where "It was bumped but I didn't see any scratches or anything" resulted in a busted mount point which then resulted in excess flex which resulted in spiderweb cracks which eventually resulted in additional mounts cracking, seeing shit like that really puts me in long sentence mode.

Does it ride straight? Feel like there is anything wrong while riding it?

If you don't see any damage and it rides fine chances are it is fine. It looks like the bike just rocked forward a bit. Lucky it wasn't knocked off the side stand. Probably nothing to worry about but you could have it looked at by a mechanic if it makes you feel better.

Looks like she caught the passenger peg which pushed the bike into the boxes in front of it. Possible she bent the passenger peg on the right side but that's not something that would be a safety issue for a solo rider. I'd look around for damage to the passenger peg though but if you don't carry passengers it probably doesn't matter much.

Post a pic of the right rear of the bike. Something a bit more detailed than those animated gifs.

Why do you have a camera in the garage?

My guess is the bike is undamaged unless the pipes are down there where she hit. Proper course of action: Announce to housemate "I saw you hit my bike on the video camera I have in the garage, I wish you had told me. Also, the camera in the bathroom keeps fogging up, please take cooler showers".

She really should have mentioned it, if only for fear that some safety issue she did not understand might put you at risk.

Beyond that if everything looks fine it likely is. Your bike probably sees bigger impacts going over the average expansion joint at speed.

If there's identifiable damage definitely bring it up. If not, then no, this does not mean your roommate is now the provider of a 6-month fender to fender warranty.

Stuff happens: Fortunately, it's only stuff.

If the honesty/communication issue bothers you looking for a new roommate is perfectly reasonable.

I'd double check the rear wheel alignment just to be sure. It may ride fine straight, but turn with a misaligned wheel...

I would have a shop check it out and be sure to show them the video. There is no reason to guess or assume because then the consequences fall back to you.

If there is a fee involved, after the examination is completed, I would show her the invoice and the video and tell her she needs to pay it. After you get your money, I would approach the other roommates (if there are any) about kicking her out. I wouldn't stand for something like that.
