I have a microsoft ergonomic 4000 keyboard, in fact I have two of them. I was having trouble playing a game to the point where i had to reset. Then I was unable to type in my password. My keyboard was making 2 or 3 letters each time i pressed 1 key.

I switched to my other ms 4000 keyboard, same thing, then I tried a spare cheapo $10 dynex keyboard which is what i'm typing on now. it works.

Must have something to do with microsoft software for their own keyboards. I was using the generic software that defaults but now I've installed through the updater it's ms 4000 actual drivers, but same thing.

"This is my dynex keyboard typing normally" now I'll retype this exactly on my ms fubar'd keyboard...

"<T'h`ips3 `ips3 my key[doaor[d ,t1yp`ig.n2 .n2ormally"

I have both keyboards plugged in right now, the dynex and the ms one, the ms one not only types multiple characters but also the page was jumping around like all the short cuts are also being used automatically.

Any ideas?

If it's persisting after a restart and the problem exists on 2 keyboards of the same make I'm throwing my vote for some weird software/USB problem. As to what could persist through a restart I have no idea though, I had that problem occasionally with my G11 but never one that persisted through a restart. Does this occur in Safe Mode as well?

Just tried safe mode exact same thing.

I need to get my ms ergonomic keyboards working, this tiny little dynex keyboard makes my wrist feel like their at right angles and i have to keep my arms raised to type at any speed, lol.

To completely eliminate the possibility of software problems, download the latest version of the Ubuntu (Linux) LiveCD. Boot your computer from that and see if the behavior persists. If it does, that means you've got a hardware fault in your keyboard(s).

Ubuntu (Linux) LiveCD doesnt put Linux on your computer. It boots from teh CD and uses the RAM as a HDD. Absolutely no affect to your Windows install

Could this have a hint to the solution? Did your preferred keymap in windows get changed or corrupted?

 Exactly.

And I find it hard to believe that Linux didn't support your keyboard layout. Hundreds and hundreds of keyboard layouts have been built-in to the kernel since the 90's. Most likely you just didn't set it up properly.

Now it seems to be working fine, I'm typing on it now. Not sure what caused this problem or what solved it.. humidity?

* it's so nice to be typing on an ergonomic keyboard again
