my son plugged his US model XBox (110v) directly into the 220v mains in Europe when I wasn't looking...

anyone know what part should have fried under the circumstances??
is there a 'fuse' in there somewhere?

is it possible that anything more than the power supply would have been damaged??

You have a good chance that the thing'll be useful as an ashtray or a book holder. Don't expect anything from it.

It is possible (and probobale) that he fried more than the PSU. Before you order a new PSU, open it up to amek sure you order the right one. Check for smoke or burn marks on the mobo

make the little bastard buy a new one! $100 for a used one at gamestop. Lots of slave labor you can get out of that

thanks for all the responses, folks

a) well, a day later i could smell a very faint smell of burnt plastic...

b) my son is only 7, so I can't really blame him. I had shown him how to plug it into the 220-110V transformer, but I guess at that age, it's easy enough to forget

c) is the fuse accessible without opening up the whole thing (thereby voiding the warranty)?

Does that really matter at this point? Warrenty wont fix it.. and its useless without this being tried...

No, it is on the Powersupply.. And it is an Inline Fuse, meaning that you will need to either
1) Jump it!
or
2) Unsolder and resolder a replacement fuse

Honestly your best bet if you are not an electonics guru, is just to buy a replacement PS off ebay or Xbox-scene or something. And while you are in there, mod it. It is really the best thing you can do for an xbox.

Nope, the only way to get to the fuse is to open it up. Send it in to MS first, see if they can do something with it. Say that your PS went bad, I wouldnt say about your kid doing it though, that might not be too wise. But if they wont fix it there and they send it back, then there are the screws on the bottom of the xbox. take off the feet of it, there are four under those, then by the serial number there is a screw and another one under a different sticker. once you get those off. you should be good to go. You have to have torx to get them off though. Search xbox-scene.com to get the guide for taking it apart, and search on there for psu problems.. they'll be able to help you more.

If you mod it you can't play Xbox Live though. Just so you know. You can play on xbconnect, which is different. But don't get upset when you try to connect to xblive and things go wrong.

100 dollar education in different electrical systems yay!
he probably had an adaptor. there are many cheap ones thta just adapt the blade size, no voltage conversion. cost maybe 4dollars. other stuff like digital camera chargers and laptops which have international psus can use these just fine.

I believe that you can't play on xbox live if you mod the hard drive. How could the xbox detect that it has been modifed without some sort of data telling itself that hardware was replaced besides the harddrive?
