Well, it would seem one of my sets of Klipsch Promedia 5.1 speakers died... I've had them for about 8 years.

The big question now is should I replace them with A - High end surround sound headphones (must be super comfy!), B - find someone to repair them (I already found this thread on the subject: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1268387&page=39), or C - find some good replacement speakers (the only in-production 5.1 speakers with any decent wattage that I can find are the Logitech Z906 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121050)

I actually just retired a set of Klipsch Promedia v.2 400s after 13 years and went with C. I picked up a pair of Klipsch F-30s for not much more than the Promedias were origionally (wish I had gotten the F-20s instead, there is sort of a gap between the tweeters and the 8" drivers in the F-30s).

When my Klipsch Promedia 5.1s amp died a few yrs ago, i bought a set of Logitech z-5500's to replace them.
No complaints with the z-5500's. (well, my neighbors complain sometimes)

not worth trying to repair them, my ultra 5.1's have been repaired by klipsch twice and then i had elliotronics guy fix it. sadly they all lasted about 6mos to 1 yr after each "repair"

it's just a faulty amp period.

I also replaced my 5.1's with the z5500's but a good receiver and speakers will sound better if it's in your budget.

If it's just the amp/sub that's dead I suppose you have the option of just buying a receiver to power the speakers that presumably still work and another sub...

Absolutely do not get surround sound headphones if sound quality matters to you.

Ok scratch that, was powering the F-30s off the Promedia's amp until the receiver arrived. Now that there's no longer an unnessacery sub they sound wonderful. It is not right how little power you need to drive Klipsch speakers.

For the price of those Logitechs you could get a pair of really nice bookshelf speakers and a receiver.

That's what I did with mine. I upgraded the receiver for my HT setup and hooked up my promedias to the old receiver. The OP could probably find a used receiver and sub for around $100. If surround sound is not required, then a nice set of bookshelf speakers might be better.

Have you checked the fuse?
I thought my home theater amp died but I opened it up and it was just a $5 fuse. It wasnt melted all the way through but partially and you could see the little bead. Odd thing was that it worked fine prior to me shipping it long distance and somehow the fuse melted during shipping.... I guess....
