Well today my knee is back to normal (mostly). Strange indeed. I do have some soreness this morning but nothing like yesterday. Swelling is essentially gone. Tomorrow morning I am going to try a jog around the block and see how it does.

Way to soon to jog man. Actually might not want to ever jog again. Jogging is tough on them. Don't piss around with your knees. I hurt my knee just by moving it wrong while getting up from the chair. It took an entire year to totally heal. I was scared crapless I'd never walk right again. That is a horrible feeling of desperation when it actually hits the point where you think you might not be walking normal again. Once it goes for good you could be really screwed. Jogging bothers mine now and I can feel it starting to break down. I'm never snowboarding, jogging, or any of that stuff again.

Do some walking or very light riding. Perhaps try a different type of bike with a different seat position.

Completely agree. It is too soon to jog even without knee issues.

As an ex runner who long lived with denial (like so many of them) I consider it an injurious activity for people with any kind of susceptibility to joint issues. Certainly as the years get up there it is a damn scant and lucky few who can run any meaningful number of miles without creating problems for themselves.

I probably qualify as an ex-runner. I used to run at least 4 miles a day (that's when I ran alone, two miles in the AM and two in the PM - basically a lap around the exterior of my neighborhood was two miles). I've never had knee problems. Ankle problems yes. I broke my right ankle playing hockey and rolled both of them who knows how many times playing soccer.

I think more than anything this was just an abrupt thing for my body which I hadn't done in a while. If you read up a bit, I walk and use an elliptical daily so my joints are used to being used, I think it was probably the range of motion. Even though I took it easy it was just the shock of not having done it in a while.

A bit of advice from someone whose knee problems in the past required fairly extensive PT: strengthening your quads, hamstrings, and calves will do more for preventing further knee problems than anything else you may try. The knee is a joint that relies heavily on the supporting muscles and ligaments, and without that support, it injures easily. Educate yourself first, then find ways to strengthen without strain.

Went for a light jog this morning and everything is OK. No swelling, no pain.

Going to get on the bike again tonight, but I won't ride 16 miles.

I've had those 'blowups' before man. I can sympathize. Last one was an elbow that went nuts from some work stress. I was on 4 ibuprofen every 4 for a long time.

Good, sound advice here.

I'm careful not to damage stuff in my body that can't heal. Ligaments and joints are one of those things. I'm surprised sometimes how beat up all my friends are already in their 20's.

I don't sit on my ass 24/7 but I don't do stupid shit either.

What I wouldn't give to go back 10 years and tell myself to stop running

Screw the knee, how did your butt survive? I randomly pick up my bike every few years and ride between 15-30 miles on a whim. The next day I'm good except for my butt... sooooooo painful.

Of course this could be because I'm using a $100 costco bike from ~18 years ago that still has the stock seat...
