I got a NEC 20WMGX2 yesterday and the nvidia control panel of my evga 8800gts 640mb card is certain that the NEC is a HDTV and will only let me use HDTV resolutions. This would be fine except the HDTV resolutions are not native to the panel and as such look like total crap.
I have tried 3 different drivers but there is no difference on which I use. Right now im running on the 97.95 EVGA drivers.
I have tried installing different monitor drivers but they seem not to have any effect on the nvidia control panel's monitor detection and therefore do nothing. Aside from installing the NEC driver I also tried installing sony and viewsonic drivers which have the same native resolutions as my NEC... nothing. I installed some CRT drivers and other random drivers and none had any effect.

resolution choices are...
640x480
720x480
720x576
800x600
1024x768
1280x720
1600x900
1920x1080 (which is what nvidia believes to be the native resoultion)

under properties i only goes as low as 800x600.

i do not see anything where i can override the given resolutions. if i disconnect my second monitor (which i use cuz i can actually see things) i see an option but its disabled (ie i cannot click it as its greyed out)

I am truly at a loss here. I want to use my new 20'' widescreen, but i cant see anything when I use it now. Please help! it continues to recognize my Benq just fine and runs it at the proper 1280x1024

I don't know how to set custom resolutions in the new NVIDIA control panel, but if you turn on the old version:

Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, Classic NVIDIA control panel, Apply

You can then go to:

Screen Resolutions and refresh rates, Add (under Custom resolutions and refresh rates)

And use whatever settings suit you.

i cant access the classic control panel... least not that way im doing a search for it though.... nope didnt find anything.
if i go into advanced display properties and click on the "monitor" tab the check box that allows me to allow or hide modes is disabled. thats the closest i can get to fixing the problem so far.

In Nvidia Control Panel, click on Display, then click on Manage Custom Timings. Uncheck "Treat as HDTV."

unfortunately that box is unchecked too.
is there any other things like that? any place where i could see if it thinks that box is still checked or something like that?

i mean it should not be this difficult.

See if the monitor manufacturer has any drivers for it?

Try deleting the monitor from device manager to have it redetect?

Look for RefreshForce (I believe that is the name, Powerstrip also works if you don't mind running it all the time, RefreshForce is just a registry hack).

You can force custom resolutions/refresh rates into the INF for the monitor so they will appear when you change resolutions. Not an elegant solution but it works.

forcerefresh allows me to set the 1680x1050 but it wont apply it like it says it will.
powerstrip sees that yes my monitor should run at 16x10, but wont let me change it to that.

everything knows that 16x10 is correct, its just nothing will let me do it.

Sorry, Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, the tab named for your video card, Classic NVIDIA control panel.

It is also possible that this has been removed from the newest drivers, mine are not kept all that up to date.

Sorry guys still got nothing. I have installed "Powerstrip" and disabled EVERYTHING nvidia from startup, but still no option to run 1680x1050. PS reads that 1680x1050 is correct, but I cannot set it to that from anywhere.
I also attempted to create custom drivers, but I get the same results. Looks like im headed for a format after classes are finished for the year because of a stupid monitor.

omg I had the exact same problem you had. IO have the same monitor and a 7800 gt card. Here is what I ended up finally doing.

I went into the advanced properties and made sure it was set to monitor and not tv. I had to also go into the registry and deleted all the monitor resolution settings that I could find for it except for the one that was correct.

I am not at home so I don't remember exactly all the places I went in to change things, but if you shoot me a PM I will have a look when i get home from work 9 hours from now..

I would check the Manufater's website for an Updated .inf file for the monitor.
