I get a letter today requesting me to sign a paper agreeing to repay EVERY CENT THEY?VE EVER PAID. I need to sign it, have it notarized, and then put a bullet in my head I guess. That?s like $1.2mil. Hell, I can?t even pay $300k. I?ve been receiving it for three years, minus lawyer fees, and a down payment for this dump of a house in which I can't even fit into the bathroom without loads of help.
Simple get an attorney and get it straigtened out. If you didn't scam the insurance company they can't just out of the blue want you to return all the money paid out. If everything is on the level all the attorney would have to do is tell the insurance company that your going "public" with the story. See what some TV news coverage will do for the insurance companies rep. Might even go beyond local to a national story. Trust me,no insurance company wants this type of story seen by millions.

Get an attorney, this will be over before it starts....

Crab, don't sweat it.

You're gonna make out just fine. If you think they're gonna screw you, you're wrong.

Your lawyer is going to eat them up and spit them out when they come before a judge and try to screw you over to this extent.

You won't need luck.

Of course, you'll all be updated as things progress.

I do have one random comment here - you mentioned something about a downpayment on a house. If your bills etc are a recurring issue, it seems to me like you might NOT want to own that house. (since it can become a substantial asset that someone could try to use against you in the future) Since it sounds like you'll be dealing with lawyers for a while, you may also want to do some financial planning looking forward around that kind of thing.

(I only mention this, because after buying a house and having it appreciate ~$80k, suddenly my net worth went from nothing worth anyone worrying about, to someone potentially being able to sue me for $100,000 and win. With your medical costs etc, it MIGHT be in your best interest to keep your personal assests as minimal as possible, IE "rent" the house from your parents or a relative etc)

The red tape one has to go through in our healthcare system is amazing. As if you don?t have enough problems. Insurance companies do make mistakes but sometimes they are reluctant to admit their mistakes and pay out. It?s a business, and not always a compassionate one.

I?ve had some experience in mixing news media, including ?60 minutes?, with opposing politicians to enact a law within our state to keep children with specific healthcare problems from being institutionalized. These were a particular group of kids, encompassing a few hundred, which were falling through the cracks of the system. After the insurance capped, the families were being bankrupted and they had no other choice but to institutionalize their children to receive healthcare.

I fought for few years through diplomatic channels to keep these families together and provide healthcare for these at home kids. I found reason, compassion and financial common sense, lacking in many of our government officials. Although your situation is different, if you are forced to go the media + political route, I?ll be more than happy to help.

Good luck and take care. My heart goes with you.

Or better yet have it in a significant others name or family members. Just keep your name off of the title and they can't touch it.

Crab, I'll wish you good luck again as I remember reading about your situation before. I think you posted about it in response to a thread on ATOT. Everyone has given excellent advice and I hope you make out of this mess alright. Make sure you get the best attorneys out there and let ATOT know if it can help. Good luck buddy!

It's been said a few dozen times already, but just wanted to add my "props" to Crab-I'm sure you're not seeking sympathy or anything of that nature, but your story reminds me, and I'm sure many of us, to keep things in perspective. Hang in there, man A friend of mine is wheelchair-bound (MD has progressed), and he ran into similar problems. In the end, just find good representation and everything will get sorted out.
