I will never buy an American car again.
I will not buy an el cheapo American car, but given the chance, I would buy a 1957 Corvette, a 1957 Belair, a 66 or 67 Chevelle SS, or a number of '60s muscle cars.
I've had pretty good luck with American cars, we love our '98 Buick Regal, and my beater '89 S10 looks like hell but runs like a top, and I do NOT baby cars, I'm quite hard on them.
And the only thing I can think of that would cause a head to be destroyed by changing a spark plug is if something dropped into the cylinder chamber while the spark plug was out, or during install. Or if the spark plug shattered and dropped ceramic pieces into the cylinder.
I personally think that they are feeding you a bunch of BS, so they don't have to pay for the repairs. Get specifics and request to see the damaged parts, along with the pieces that caused the damage. Take pictures if you can, and seek out opinions from other repair shops.
