What about police academy or border patrol. There's also just regular kinds of federal jobs. You get to serve your country, you just dont get to shoot any foreigners

I surprised they wouldn't let you do non-combat duty such as clerical or supply stuff. It may not be as glorious as combat, but it is just as important.

Anyways, good luck in your quest, it takes a real man to want to voluntarily join the military in the time of war .

They still have a little way to go on dumping current enlistees.
They can afford to be VERY picky on new recruits right now.

I think it may the same for the others. Fighting a so-called war takes money, and a congressmans brother-in-law takes priority over 100,000 warriors.

How can the military afford to be picky when they are desperate to send more troops to Iraq. We are on the brink of a draft.

Hey guys, sorry for the randomness but I feel like venting.

All I've wanted to do my entire life is serve my country(USA). I've had no other plans. It's my senior year in high school so I went to the local Marine Corps recruiting station to enlist.
I went to MEPS(Military Entry Processing Station) nearly aced the ASVAB(Standard aptitude test for enlistment) and breezed through the physical. That is, until the vision test. I've always had bad eyesight, only correctable to 20/40 with glasses. After that long process, I was DQ'd and had to get a note from my eye doctor, and I did. The note stated my nearsightedness, but also recommended me for a waiver, I was denied. For months my recruiters tried everything they could to get me in, but to no avail.
So after that, I went to the ARMY to see what they could do for me, same long process, same denied waiver. So I went to the NAVY with the notion that I would be denied enlistment, but they said they'd try anyway. It's been about 2 weeks now and I have received no word from the Navy. It's a pretty hopeless situation, I have nothing I wish to major in, in college unless I can enter an ROTC program. I'm physically fit, scored pretty well on the ASVAB, but there's nothing I can do even while they call more and more troops overseas. I want to be one of them, I want infantry, I want to serve the United States of America.

I admire your determination to serve
At the same time, you did what was in your power, they rejected you, now it's time to close that chapter, move on, go to college, get a career, and be all you can be, like those Army ads said.

Yeah, well, right now is not exactly the best time to get into the military. Consider yourself lucky.

Your motto: I'm going to save my sorry ass first, and bash everyone serving to make myself feel better.

You can serve your country in other facets than being cannon fodder. I for one am going into the legal sector to quench my thirst for national duty.
Why do you have to degrade others by calling them cannon fodder? These men are hardly such, but men who are skilled, and don't get killed easily. Rangers, Marines, Naval Corpsmen, all have a job and if they do it right, they triumph. They're doing their job as best as they can, and they're doing it right. You're not helping, acting like a stuck up prig.
And suing people doesn't count as national duty.
Maybe you didn't mean it offensively in which case I apologize, but if you did....go to hell.

I don't use the term "cannon fodder" as a degrading term but rather as a synonym for "Infantry."

"And suing people doesn't count as national duty." -- Is that what you think the only job of a lawyer is? I'll leave you to bask in your ignorance.

"...but if you did...go to hell" -- I believe that there is no such thing as "hell" but I understand your point.

FWIW, it's spelled "prick." Assuming, of course, you're not trying to make up some new word.

Feel for you. I tried to join the Corps... nearly aced the ASVAB and was just shy of a perfect physical test score but in the end they wouldn't let me join because of a history for asthma (which I hadn't had symptoms of in almost 10 years, and even then they were allergy related and not exercise-induced). I was so pissed. And of course I had to sit and watch little 90lb weaklings get enlisted while struggling to pull half the physical test score I got while they told me I wasn't getting in.

If he is going to be a pilot, i think he will need very keen eyesight , of course there are other things he can do.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I was disqualified by the Navy today, so I walked over to the National Guard Recruiter.

The journey continues...

There really should be higher age limits for joining the military.
I'd set it at 21 as the absolute minimum, but probably even higher than that.

That said, IMHO it does have a down side. I believe we are better served as a society when everyone thinks things through for themselves and acts according to their own conclusions. I certainly wouldn't want the people around me to continue to "hang up" their morals or "let the higher ups worry about the reasons why" after they've left the service. Sometimes I wonder if there should be some "basic untraining" at the end of military service.

your comments about the military requiring that soldiers suspend their individual judgments were interesting. It is a fine line, surely, look at what happened in places like Abu Graib. No doubt those morons got a nod and a wink from higher up to behave like animals. If some of them had thought for themselves, and realized that their behavior was grossly immoral and bound to bring shame to the us military, maybe they would said something to someone who could have stopped it.

That sucks indeed. I will probably be in a similar situation, only dream is joining up, but my eyes are sub-shite level. Think I broke 6.00 diopeters last year. Just hope I can finish my college degree and get some kind of 'leverage'.

Also, I'm going to guess you're going infantry. You could try other jobs (not front line) as they have lower vision requirements. That or get lasik, just hope they perfect it soon.

Sorry to hear about your problem OP. Hope you find some way in. If you can't, there's always local emergency services which would also be an immense help to our nation.

Sorry to hear that. Don't give up the pursuit if you really want it. Switch recruiters if necessary, b/c from what it sounds like your vision shouldn't be auto DQ. Don't run off and do lasik, if you want to fly anyway. Ask your recruiter if you would be eligible for a PRK procedure provided you sign a contract. Good luck.

No we're not. Only a handful of far left politicians have called for a draft because they think they can score political points with their constituents.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.

No, not really. The draft is a pragmatic solution to the real problem of recruitment. You'd be surprised who's exactly calling for one.

My buddy couldn't work for the government because he couldn't see 9 out of the 20 numbers in color blindness tests. It does suck.
