Have had this happen twice on the computers at work, both times on a dell and both times with a CD with a very small crack in the edge of the disk. Needless to say the latter was the cause. Both times we pulled the covers from the drives, removed all the "cd debris", blew it out with compressed air and all was fine.

lucky!

Yeah, I thought everything was going to be fine too - took it apart, grabbed the fatty can compressed air and a few shakes later was installing it back in my case. Turned on the system and my Lite-on didn't Lite!, A matter of fact it looked like a sick college kid at a keg party, the door was endlessly extending out, then closing itself back in, rinse..lather..repeat non-stop.

That's funny. Just two days ago a cdr shattered in my Creative 52x CDrom. It didn't even occur to me to RMA it - but it's far too old to do that. I'm really surprised this is such a common occurance. The shattered CD looks very familiar tho!

Cheers.

Yeah, you should of saw the look on my neighbors face when I told him! I think most people are shocked, just thinking about 1000 tiny sharp shiny shards flying outta their computer spinning at 10,00RPM!! That's it! All we have to do is send Sadamm and his buddies free computers (bill you listening?) all loaded up with Lite-On 40x drives and cheap MGI software! My god, can it be that easy? I know, we'll throw in some AOL discs just to be sure

Just don't expect those AOL discs to explode. A few years ago I tried to break an AOL CD and it turned out to be quite durable. I was able to bend it so far the two opposite sides were touching! It took a while but I did eventually get it to break.

I foresee an opening in the CD market for a new product, the "safety" CD, guaranteed not to explode in your CD burner! "Our special Kevlar reinforcing layer, combined with a band of titanium constaining the edge, allows the new "safety" CD to reach speeds in excess of 100x without failing!" Or something along those lines (technical details are still being worked out).

Deal this matter "the American way!"

Go to your PCP have him write you a medcial note.
Pass the note along w/ the pic to Liteon and Dell.
NOT happy w/ their response?
Sent it to BBB, and contact your lawyer. hahaha......

But seriously, you should get their attention on this matter.
What if little Johnny just happen to peak into this Drive while it exploded?

Yeah either way i'm going to let both Lite-On and MGI software Corp. know - it's only the right consumer thing to do! I bet if I had a picture of half a disc inbedded in my head (w/little bit of ketchup for special effect) I would get a RMA real fast!

This has happened to me before with a old old creative 5X DVD drive, the killer part is it was the creative CD! I called creative and told them... they replaced the drive cause it was their own disk that did it in their drive, I told them if they want proof, look inside the drive itself and peice the CD back together and theyll see
