My Logitech MX700 blows

Damn straight they should be shot! I know know how they could have allowed this oversight. Although we cannot bind program-specific keystrokes to all 8 buttons, oddly enough we can still use IntelliPoint 4.12 with the MX700 to assign keystrokes as well as program-specific binding.

for the less inclined:
Plug the MX700 to the PS/2 Port (so, afaik, IntelliPoint won't detect the mouse as an MX700 via USB info)
Uninstall MouseWare and install IntelliPoint.
Set your mouse to the wireless explorer (the other ones might work too).
Now you can program the wheel button.

I hope this helps anyone else out there that needed the wheel button to be binded to a keystroke.

Windows Media Player/WinAmp/PowerDVD
-> Wheel Button = Pause
-> Large button = back playlist
-> Small button = forward playlist

Too bad IntelliPoint didn't magically detect the other 3 buttons (the two cruise buttons still work but you dont see the cruise-icon)

i just installed my mx700 and kb duo, i must say this is the best combo i have ever used. the keyboard keys are so soft and quiet, and the mouse is smooth and comfortable. are you sure you have the right drivers, etc? did you try adjusting the mouse settings? hope you get it all figured out because it is a great product.
