No it's not. Once you start, you can't stop the craving for it.

Read this:

How Nicotine Works

Given how obviously addictive it is, and how many people die (earlier) from it, I don't know why anyone today would still want to start this.

HOWEVER, if your mom smoked around you your entire life, then you can blame her for starting. Second hand smoke still had enough quantity of the addictive compounds in it over long term exposure. Plus she wasn't acting as a good role model. I think most smoking parents are oblivious/ignorant to this fact.

Start smoking at 11? Err, okay but hard to believe

I started when I was 12 and smoked for 12 more years before I quit.

Sorry, but until you get your own place and stop freeloading at home, you have to abide by your parents rules. Anyone that starts smoking is stupid as was I when I started. I wasn't hooked initially either.

Don't you have to be 18 to legally buy cigarettes?

This is so untrue. Think about that catlion - do you think she went back just for the heck of it? There are permanent irreversible imprints in the brain that encourage the addiction for the rest of your life.

Yes, it is the law. You must be 18 years or older to buy cigs....so how are you getting them?

its not a rule, im not complaining that she doesnt want me to. i just dont think its fair to smoke around me my whole life, buy my older brother cigarettes (when he was under 18), and then expect me not to smoke. yes you have to be 18, but i have a lot of friends over 18 and my friend and i have some crappy id's that say were 18 .. some cart in the mall takes them.

Caitlion,

I won't date girls that smoke. I tried with one girlfriend about 2 years ago, and I broke up with her after 6 months.

In case you missed the Superbowl commercial, check out the ShardsOGlass popsicle ad.

Ever think that she might want a better life for you? Watching a Grandfather die of emphysema has a way of making you want to quit as well.

If you really don't care about your health, then think monetary. When I was smoking, I could get a carton of Newports for 5 bucks at the Px, but now it is 2-4 a pack. Start keeping track of how much you spend on cigarettes. Hell, even a pack a week is still a couple hundred dollars a year. So not only are you missing out on a 400 dollar shopping spree from Nordstrom's every year, but you are increasing your chances of getting lung cancer and dieing a slow agonizing death. Your choice.

i know. my grandma died from lung cancer. i hated my brother so much, because i found out that he smoked right after she died. i dont know why i chose to start. i smoke probably a pack every 2 weeks.. and sometimes not at all. i dont like nordstroms, but i get your point.

this is not supposed to be a thread for you to all tell me about how bad it is. i already know. the thing is, what can my mom say when she does it herself?

If she did crystal meth would it be alright if you did it too? Just because someone else does something bad does not mean you should. Since you are her own flesh & blood this gives her the right to care about what you do, even though she is slowly killing herself. Not to mention the fact that you still live under her roof.

Maybe you should ask your mom if she 'wants' to quit. Maybe you'll get a better understanding of how she feels about it all. I personally have mixed feelings about smokers. If it's a stranger, I don't care. If it's a friend, then I really want them to stop. If it's a relative, I'll kick their ass.

I'm done

where the hell are you quoting "inconclusive" from? Phillip Morris probably threw that up on their webpage just to avoid another future onslaught of lawsuits. They do not provide any statistical evidence or information on how the study was conducted, how large the sample, etc.

Won't do it for me.

Your name now makes perfect sense.

Bash all you want, but just telling me I am stupid doesn't mean anything. I think you are a dumbshit too. I am not saying I do not believe it is harmful, I think it is likely that it is, however, there is no hard evidence of it. Give me credible sources with numbers that can be backed up and I will believe it.

Alright missy. Time for the reality stick to beat you over the head just a little bit.

Your mom is your parent and can tell you exactly what to do. Yes even if she does it herself. You are much too young to understand life and the consequences of your actions/decisions so it is up to her to make them for you.

She has learned the consequences of smoking and is trying to be a good parent. One day you'll realize why your mom does what she does...

it is because she loves you and that is the only reason. Now grow up and listen to your mother.

wow, this is some heated, long discussion.
we all know the no-pro and con of smoking.

anyway, you should just cut smoking.
it's a personal choice that affects everyone around you, it's kind of a crime so to speak.
you can get some inhaler if you want some deep breathing.

What questions do you have? I'll provide you with evidence that smoking and second-hand smoke are harmful.

I'm a doctor and yes, I've seen many patients suffer from the effects of second-hand smoke. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop respiratory infections and asthma.

People exposed to second hand smoke are 13 to 32% more likely to develop lung cancer than unexposed individuals.
Abstract

Exposure to spouse?s smoking increases risk of lung cancer by over 20%

It's really sad that you're literate and actually would write something like that. I've no intention of doing your research for you, but google is more than willing. It won't take you long to find any number of studies with conclusive, undeniable causal links between smoking and illnesses and decreased longevity.

This thread is like the seatbelt threads. No matter how many people die from not wearing a seatbelt in a 10 mph crash you're still going to find a few people here and there who think that they still don't need to use one. Darwinism isn't finished with us yet!

uhhh, no offence, but youre a dumbass. youre acting like im mad that my mom told me not to smoke and im gonna do it just to piss her off. and i dont care if its bad for you cause its cool and im gonna do it !L:L@#@>#

heh. anyway. i hope you never have kids. i am not much too young to understand life and the consquences of my actions.. i may need guidance from time to time, and she is always there for me when i do. but i do NOT need someone to make my decisions for me. and she rarely ever does. you make it sound like im 3 years old or something.

Instead of trying to be the know it all that your post makes you look like, take her advise and give up that NASTY, STINKING, DISGUSTING, DEADLY, HABIT.

I bet you've never spent any time around someone dieing from emphazema (sp?) or lung cancer. It's not a pretty way to go.

I wish people would keep their moralistic judgmental platitudes to themselves.
If we cannot learn a little tolerance (me included) and soon we are gonna face much bigger problems than smoking.
If you like to smoke go for it, I quit, but I am sure you know the cost and benefits and if you don?t you will before long.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
