Alright missy. Time for the reality stick to beat you over the head just a little bit.

Your mom is your parent and can tell you exactly what to do. Yes even if she does it herself. You are much too young to understand life and the consequences of your actions/decisions so it is up to her to make them for you.

She has learned the consequences of smoking and is trying to be a good parent. One day you'll realize why your mom does what she does...

it is because she loves you and that is the only reason. Now grow up and listen to your mother.

uhhh, no offence, but youre a dumbass. youre acting like im mad that my mom told me not to smoke and im gonna do it just to piss her off. and i dont care if its bad for you cause its cool and im gonna do it !L:L@#@>#

heh. anyway. i hope you never have kids. i am not much too young to understand life and the consquences of my actions.. i may need guidance from time to time, and she is always there for me when i do. but i do NOT need someone to make my decisions for me. and she rarely ever does. you make it sound like im 3 years old or something.

haha whatever, you're like "i'm gonna smoke because it relaxes me, my mom is so hypocritical because she tells me not to smoke, i don't care what she says, blah blah blah". sure you're capable of making your own decisions, they're just less than smart.

I hope I'm pulling this out of context, because if that's your reason, that's messed up. It's not cool to smell awful and hinder your breathing, taste, smell, etc.

You seem to understand the consequences of your actions, but 30 years down the line, will you regret them?

It just seems like such a waste, to throw your health and money away all for an addiction.

uhhh no offense, but you are still immensely immature. You're a teenager & you think that you are invulnerable and omniscient. Huge shock. Your mother wants you to avoid the mistakes she made. Huge shock. You post on the internet that she's, like, a hypocrite, and, like, thats so unfair, and , like, no one understands you, and like, you are just going to go and paint your room black. Huge shock.

So - do what you want to do. Live with it when people laugh at you and think you are stupid. In twenty odd years, you will have your own children and be having the same arguments with them. And when you ask your mom for help you'll laugh with her about the things that happened when she brought you up, and, if you have any good grace, you'll be embarrassed about what a brat you were sometimes. Huge shock.

Welcome to the human race. Get used to it. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out

this is not supposed to be a thread for you to all tell me about how bad it is. i already know. the thing is, what can my mom say when she does it herself?

Your mom is probably aware of the hypocrisy of the situation, and she may even be a bit ashamed of it (from your original description of your confrontation, she seemed very uncomfortable with the whole thing). Why don't you talk to her about it? Maybe the two of you can quit together.

What questions do you have? I'll provide you with evidence that smoking and second-hand smoke are harmful.

I'm a doctor and yes, I've seen many patients suffer from the effects of second-hand smoke. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop respiratory infections and asthma.

People exposed to second hand smoke are 13 to 32% more likely to develop lung cancer than unexposed individuals.
Abstract

Exposure to spouse?s smoking increases risk of lung cancer by over 20%
British Medical Journal

Jesus fvcking Christ people. Those are pooled or meta-analysis of the SAME TWO studies that have been discredited. I've got no doubt that primary smoking is incredibly deadly, but as far as second hand smoke there is NOT a lot of evidence at least evidence that is credible.

I'm very perceptive, which is fortunate since you're so deeply subtle.

Seriously, this has been beaten to death. Smoking is stupid. Your mom doesn't want to see you get hooked since it's really, really hard to quit. You two should try quitting together. That's about the long and short of it and has been repeated ad nauseum, now let it go.

If nobody else has suggested it (I haven't real all 47000 posts), have you considered telling your mom that if she will quit, you will too? Quit together. She could live long enough to watch her grandkids grow up, and you both will be healthier for it.

Quick question mill, do you smoke? if yes, what brand?

Also, thanks on a mutual level for backing up my argument which so many credited members immediately dismissed.

On an everday basis? No. Only on the weekends when I drink, and even then not always. I have been known, however, to smoke a few when very nervous. Oh, and Brand? I really switch around. Typically some type of menthol such as Marlboro Mild, Parliment, or Newport.

Second hand smoke is obviously bad for you. Unless you are willing to say that the person who breathes it in initially filters out every carcinogen and all that smoke that is breathed back out is now perfectly harmless? But it's really a question of exposure. How often is a person exposed to second hand smoke?

Even people who smoke know it's bad for you, so parents who smoke definitely don't want their children to pick up their bad habits.

Discredited by whom? By the tobacco industry? Or smokers who are in denial?

These 2 studies, while not randomised-controlled trials, are rather solid. These large case-control studies confirm anecdotal experiences of physicians who have observed many children and asthmatics suffer from second-hand smoke. Randomised-controlled trials are not practical in this application as the period of follow-up is very lengthy. Case-control studies are ok as long as the statistical analysis is done in a stringent manner and the variables are carefully screened to avoid confounding.

If you want to discredit those 2 studies, I'd like to hear your analysis.

The WHO study was based on the EPA study, and the EPA study cherry-picked data and had a pre-conceived conclusion.

Safe =! what I said. I said the studies had been discredited, and that there was no scientific evidence to prove it was as harmful as the media hype it to be if harmful at all.
