Discredited by whom? By the tobacco industry? Or smokers who are in denial?

These 2 studies, while not randomised-controlled trials, are rather solid. These large case-control studies confirm anecdotal experiences of physicians who have observed many children and asthmatics suffer from second-hand smoke. Randomised-controlled trials are not practical in this application as the period of follow-up is very lengthy. Case-control studies are ok as long as the statistical analysis is done in a stringent manner and the variables are carefully screened to avoid confounding.

If you want to discredit those 2 studies, I'd like to hear your analysis.

The WHO study was based on the EPA study, and the EPA study cherry-picked data and had a pre-conceived conclusion.

Care to give examples of "cherry-picked" data? Or is that a cop out?

Examples of pre-conceived conclusions? Or are those hypotheses that were supported by the data?

I'm going on well known criticisms of the report. Your beef is with the scientists that discredited it and not me.

anyway, im not a big smoker. i smoke occasionally. and no, not to look cool. its relaxing. i just like it. this wasnt meant to be a thread where all the nonsmokers can come and yell at me alright?

I have quit and gone back.

Trying to wquit smoking is like trying not to pee ever. Once your hooked, it is very hard to stop, I use to smoke a pack, sometimes 2 packs a day, I am down to about 3-4 packs a week....

I smoke cuz

A.) I am 22, I know beter
B.) It relieves stress
C.) I have my own house, I live under my own roof, and I follow my own rules. I moved out of my moms at age 17 cuz I didn;t like ehr rules, one of which, no smoking.

Well, since she has already said in this thread that she's 17, all you would have to do is use process of elimination.

Ah, couldn't resist - the humorous response was just sitting there, waiting to be said.

Caitlion, regardless of how hypocritical you may think your mother is, and regardless how wrong you think her assessment of you and your "smoking relaxation" is, your mother loves you and is only providing advice. She's a parent - what loving parent wouldn't give their child advice? She knows smoking is bad for you AND her. She's not hypocritical - she's addicted. I'm sure that if she had the ability to turn back time and choose never to start smoking, she would do so in a heartbeat.

Plus, whoever is supplying you with cigs is breaking the law - for a few more months, anyway. But who cares about that, right? It's not your life if they go to jail.

When you're 18, light 'em up, if you must. Smoke yourself crosseyed. But, for now, I would suggest two things (and again, these are only suggestions - feel free to ignore them at your whim). One, please respect your mom's wishes, for now. You don't have to agree with her advice, but you should respect her enough to do what she asks while you're living in her house and still a minor. Two, please see your mom's actions for what they ARE and not for what they are NOT... your mom's not trying to blindly assert control of you or simply telling you what to do for no reason... your mom is simply trying to help... the best way she knows how.

Then again, if you won't listen to your mom, who loves you, why in the world would you listen to me?
