I dont have a clue whats really up with this mouse its very old. this is a MS wheel man mouse. one of the first opticals. Well its very weird on my usb ports. it refuses to work on any of my system's ports but it will work on 2 of my 5 port usb2.0 PCI card. and now it starts to skip like i unplug and repluged it back in. well xp gives me that sound. Now i love my MS mouse. but i guess its time for me to get a new one. Not too sure which would be the better way to go about this now. Should i stick with MS or go to logitech. I'm not a big gamer or anything just a websurfer. i like how my ms feels vs the standard logitechs. what should i do?

i have the same one as you, and like yours, mine is skippy also. it's because of wear and tear. the cord is breaking apart inside the wires. i've already disected mine and fixed it half a yr ago, but now it's happening again. still, i love that mouse.

I just recently bought a lil blue-tooth mouse. (Or should I call it a hamster since it has no tail?) It works great with my bluetooth powerbook, but it comes with drivers for WinXP so all you have to do is buy one of those cheapo bluetooth dongles. Bluetooth is much more reliable than other wireless technologies, and this lil baby doesn't skip a mickey (except maybe when it sleeps).

A lot of thought went into the design. It's a 3-button scroll mouse, symmetrical and slightly peanut shapped so your thumb has a comfortable lil knook to rest in. The top is glossy smooth plastic, but the sides have a slight rubbery coating for good finger traction.

It's small -- I thought at first too small -- but that means that you don't have to bend your palm upwards as much as with larger mice and thus you don't put as much pressure on your wrist.

Runs on 2 AAA batteries.

The model is BT500 and you can check it out at bluetake.com.

For wheel mice - if it feels skippy, a lot of times it's crap in the mouse. You can open up the thing that holds the ball, take the ball out and clean the wheels. You'll probably see some gray tar-like crap on the wheels, I don't know what it is (compressed dust?) but I know it clogs up the mouse and makes it feel funny, use something to scrape it off and make sure it doesn't fall into the mouse.

go to the store, and try them out.
i personally love the feel of the logitech mx300, i used the optical blue for awhile and it was grand, but when it broke, the mx300 entered my life.
i personally like the feel of ms's ergonomic mice over logitech, but i really like the mx300 over most other mice. Whatever is comfortable is best, especially if gaming isn't an issue.

maybe i should go to the store and look at stuff. but then about i was hoping to grab a key/mouse combo on black friday. non-wireless of course, I dunno me and wireless dont work. I mean yea i like the whole no wires and junk but the changing of the batteries is too much for me. besides i almost never use AAA batteries. Not sure to switch over to logitech or stay with MS still. i mean really now when i go to the store and try them all of them will feel funny because my hand hasn't gotten used to it. I remember when i got my MS mouse i felt the same, but now i really love it. I was thinking of getting the same mouse in the 5 button form. But its a bit taller.

There were plenty of defective 1st generation optical mice that MS replaced for free. Somewhere in the Hot Deals archive, there is a discussion and a phone number to call and complain to Microsoft.

Just get a new one. For over three months now my local Office Depot has had the "MS Basic Optical Mouse" (USB and a wheel) for $12.95 or less. It works great (I have bought a total of six of them for work and home.)

I'm getting this I-Rocks 800dpi optical wired USB mouse for 10 bucks. It looks good, I hope it works well. It's just 2 buttons with a scroller. I'm not into mice with like 7 buttons, and big mice feel really weird.
