yesterday night, around 11, I was just sitting with my laptop typing away mindlessly, when I heard a distant ambulance siren. Given that we live not far from the hospital, it's not an uncommon sound, so I just blocked it out without paying attention.
But then the flashing lights outside in the darkness caught my attention, and I saw a fire truck passing by our house and stopping right in front of the neighbors. Followed immediately by a police car, and an ambulance behind it. Paramedics immediately got out and rushed inside the house.
We live in a close-knit neighborhood where pretty much everyone knows each other, so I went outside to see what's going on. The garage door was open, and the door to the kitchen as well, but you couldn't see much. The other neighbors were out as well: this couple that lived in the house had a 2-year old child, and we were very worried something happened to the kid.
About twenty minutes passed, and paramedics were still inside. We saw the kid milling around in the kitchen with his mother, so we knew it must be the husband or someone staying with them. Then we saw a cop come over to the mother and tell her something - and she literally collapsed on the floor. I've never seen anything like that before - it was just like a silent movie. They closed the door, and a little while after sweaty and very frustrated paramedics came out and loaded up empty gurneys.
The guy did not make it. He was around 40. Died from a heart attack. Left a young wife and a 2-year old kid. They just celebrated 2-year anniversary a week ago.
Another squad car came, and they started taking pictures of the bedroom upstairs. We asked the cops to let the wife know we'd be happy to sit with the kid while she copes with her husband's death.
This morning when we decided to drop by, we found the house empty and locked. She left with the kids for the relatives in the Bay Area.
Cliffs:
- neighbor passed away.
