My neighbor passed away yesterday

yesterday night, around 11, I was just sitting with my laptop typing away mindlessly, when I heard a distant ambulance siren. Given that we live not far from the hospital, it's not an uncommon sound, so I just blocked it out without paying attention.

But then the flashing lights outside in the darkness caught my attention, and I saw a fire truck passing by our house and stopping right in front of the neighbors. Followed immediately by a police car, and an ambulance behind it. Paramedics immediately got out and rushed inside the house.

We live in a close-knit neighborhood where pretty much everyone knows each other, so I went outside to see what's going on. The garage door was open, and the door to the kitchen as well, but you couldn't see much. The other neighbors were out as well: this couple that lived in the house had a 2-year old child, and we were very worried something happened to the kid.

About twenty minutes passed, and paramedics were still inside. We saw the kid milling around in the kitchen with his mother, so we knew it must be the husband or someone staying with them. Then we saw a cop come over to the mother and tell her something - and she literally collapsed on the floor. I've never seen anything like that before - it was just like a silent movie. They closed the door, and a little while after sweaty and very frustrated paramedics came out and loaded up empty gurneys.

The guy did not make it. He was around 40. Died from a heart attack. Left a young wife and a 2-year old kid. They just celebrated 2-year anniversary a week ago.

Another squad car came, and they started taking pictures of the bedroom upstairs. We asked the cops to let the wife know we'd be happy to sit with the kid while she copes with her husband's death.

This morning when we decided to drop by, we found the house empty and locked. She left with the kids for the relatives in the Bay Area.

Cliffs:
- neighbor passed away.

Maybe go for a walk to the store instead of driving...

2 lungs, 2 kidneys. One heart. Horray for redundancy of critical systems.

This is sad, especially leaving behind a 2 yo.

This is also a good argument for the boneheads who say life insurance is a rip off. Most people cannot accumulate enough money by 40 to see their spouses thru and put their kids thru college.

The cop should have made the wife sit down before telling her the news. Very sad indeed

That sucks.
I just got back from a viewing. The ex-wife's great aunt. She was 85.
I enjoyed seeing the whole family and managed to avoid the ex wife, so it went very well.

You knew the guy...how did he look? Was he overweight, high stressed?

My uncle had a major heart attack at age 42 and he was skinny and seemed to be in excellent health. Fortunately, he survived and is doing well now.

My god that's young. I'm also curious about his health, what kind of shape was he in, what kind of job did he have and was he uptight or laid back?

Wow, Such a shame.

Weird that they declared death at the scene. Especialy for such a young person. Also a doctor need to declare death. I suppose they radio'd it in, but still unusual.

My father had a major heart attack when he was 53, they had to shock him back. His father passed away from heart failure. I better GTF back into shape. :Q
