I just heard from my sister today that my nephew, Ben has contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia and is on a ventilator. He was brought in Thursday night at 2:00 AM. He was covered in black splotches caused by the infection.

He is now on a 48 hour watch. If he survives the next 48 hours then he should make a good recovery. I don't want to think of the alternative.

Ben is about 8 months old.

The London Health Unit has quarantined the family and all have been given antibiotics. So they aren't having any visitors for a while.

So it is obvious my sister and her family are not having a merry Christmas this year.

UPDATE: He has been taken off the ventilator and is breathing on his own. There was a spike in his temperature but the doctors aren't sure why. He is doing better. He was semi-conscious and was able to respond to my sister and squeeze her finger. He was checked out today by the plastic surgery team to see what kind of restoration is necessary. He has the dark blotches that could turn necrotic. These will form scars regardless. He will be assessed later on for neurologic impairment as well as hearing impairment. He maybe hospitalized for up to a month. This is good news so far!

Second UPDATE Ben was released from the Hospital Saturday Dec 31. He is doing great but still has blotches on him. No signs of any neurological problems yet. He will still require more check ups over the coming weeks to make sure he is healthy. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good wishes.

Sepsis

Meningococcus is spread through the exchange of saliva and other respiratory secretions during activities like coughing, kissing, and chewing on toys. Though it initially produces general symptoms like fatigue, it can rapidly progress from fever, headache and neck stiffness to coma and death. The symptoms are easily confused with those of meningitis caused by other organisms such as Hemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae.[4] Death occurs in approximately 10% of cases.[6] Those with impaired immunity may be at particular risk of meningococcus (e.g. those with nephrotic syndrome or splenectomy; vaccines are given in cases of removed or non-functioning spleens).

All recent contacts of the infected patient over the 7 days before onset should receive medication to prevent them from contracting the infection. This especially includes young children and their child caregivers or nursery-school contacts, as well as anyone who had direct exposure to the patient through kissing, sharing utensils, or medical interventions such as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Anyone who frequently ate, slept or stayed at the patient's home during the 7 days before the onset of symptom, or those who sat beside the patient on an airplane flight of 8 hours or longer, should also receive chemoprophylaxis.[4]

My Grandma went septic 4 times in the last 6 months, almost lost her each time but she made it through! She is 82, and I hope Ben will pull through all the same!

Best of luck, in my thoughts.

My Grandpa went septic on Thursday afternoon and passed away early Friday morning. It's a terrifying experience for the family and there's very little you can do. Hopefully little Ben has a good fight in him and can battle through it.

This Christmas hasn't been as Merry as it could have been. My thoughts and wishes are that your's is better.
