Wow, a lot of dumb people on this board. Pussification of the world FTW.

The guy is fed up with the constant stupidity that is coming from that side of the family. I would be too.

I have a niece who started driving and got an older Tacoma for her first car. I told my sister "I can't believe you got her a truck...you know her. It won't end well". She wrecked it twice in one week; once she took a turn too fast and ended up with the rearend in a ditch, then she took another turn too fast and fishtailed into an oncoming duallie, totaled her truck and did 14-20K damage to the other truck. FUN.

Sometimes you get fed up so much with your families stupidity that you come off as heartless when in reality you saw it coming and your pleads for change fell on deaf ears.

Good job correcting that misspelling so fast bored instead of board while you were calling people dumb would have been blood in the water.

Blame game starts.. so my nephew's older brother (13) is actually pretty good kid, he gets 90-95 on all his classes, doesn't complain, do as he's told. The dad is already blaming him for not watching his brother. The parents always favor the younger brother and now i feel like he's gonna catch some crap for this.

Apparently the bleeding is so bad, the eye is swollen pretty bad, like the eyes are popping out (translation from grandma)
Awesome parenting. Blame the kid's sibling. Now if he dies/ends up with brain damage the 13 year old can feel that sense of blame and guilt for his life.
I did all kinds of dumb/fun stuff on my bike when I was a kid, and I never wore a helmet. It silly to make kids wear helmets; it's just another example of how much of a wuss todays society has become.
'Murica. This is why I never wear a seatbelt, disconnect the air bags in my car, never put batteries in my smoke alarms. It was good enough for my Gramps who lived to 91, it's good enough for me! Ain't got no time for that there liberal mumbo jumbo, all this there whinin' about asbestos and all that nonsense *cough*.

If I ever catch one of my kids wearing a helmet while riding a bike I will slap him/her right off the bike.

ok more info, so he hit something on the road and face palm in to the curb on the sidewalk.
impact on the right side of the face.. basically his right eye may be gone or have limited vision.. they're not sure yet..

Surgery on sat was 2 holes drilled and they remove some blood and drain some fluids (translations from grandma, shes not a doctor so no idea). Apparently his brain swell up to a baseball size (grandma translation, no idea if that was even possible), I wasn't allow in so I didn't get to hear what the doctors said.. they limit 4 people and it was mom;dad; 2 grandmas.

Apparently this is the 4th time he fell off the bike without a helmet. I guess you never learn the first 3 times.

So, numerous mri, 4 doctors/surgeons were involved. Because of the impact, orthodontist - jaw issue, eye specialist for eye impact, 2 neurosurgeon for the brain.

Health care isn't cheap, i figure the final cost might be somewhere between 30-100k.

Why you and I should be pissed. Not first or second time, apparently 4th. Tax payers are flipping the bill for this, that is also you and I

A helmet might not have made a difference.

Probably won't have the desired effect, they will be wearing a helmet, try taking it off first then slapping them.

Yeah, someone needs to read up on survivorship bias. Now, DrPizza, how did you manage to do all that on a bike with a kid's seat on the back, hit a deer?
I was sprinting and the chain broke - my weight went forward over the handlebars. Bike was attached to me via the pedals (I used those strap-in peddles before; I've since switched to the clips instead) so, after I went over the bike, the bike followed me. Was probably a little above 30mph at that moment.

Bikes are inherently low-speed. It is not "horribly conceived" to say that they require less precautions to ride safely as the potential risk is MUCH lower. People have always blown it way out of proportion..
It is not the speed of the bike that matters, except in collisions with other objects (trees, etc.) It's the height of the head, with the greater possibility of the head going from that height to the pavement. The speed of the bike causes more road rash; and unless there's an impact from a curb or something, the speed doesn't contribute to cranial damage.

Trucks in general and the Tacoma in particular are terrible first cars. They're prone to rolling over and without any weight in the back they're easier to get into accidents exactly like the two you described. First cars should be safe and gutless.

And for daughters it should have a discouragingly small backseat. Truck bed + blankets + teenage girl = trouble :sneaky:

I can't say how I would raise a kid but when I was a kid, my parent would beat me if I did something wrong.

In this case, the kids are dictating what they want to do, ie not wear helmet.

The other cousins of the family dictates that they are not going to summer school this year and just stay at home and watch tv and surf the web.

Both cases the parent should put their foot down but have not done so.

I mean if you were a parent and your kid decides not to obey you, wouldn't you put your foot down ?

So maybe your sister deserves the award and not your nephew. Hell why are they having kids in the first place on their income?

Before I cast my vote I need to know if this story has a happy ending or the kid made the nominees?

I'm really sorry to hear about the nephew. Reading the thread made me wonder though. The boy's 10 so 4 bike mishaps doesn't seem odd unless they all happened in the last 6 months. The helmet discussion is a little strange to me though because they didn't exist when I was a kid. A few kids broke arms or legs from falling out of trees but, I never heard of anyone having a SERIOUS accident riding their bike unless it was being hit by a car. Also, skateboards were just that. They were boards with steel over the shoe skates nailed to them. Lots of skinned knees and bruised butts but, no serious head injuries. My grandson always wears his helmet when riding and if it keeps him safer, I guess it's a good thing but, he's a little guy and I worry he may never toughen up.

Dob! Just noticed the op date. Any update onnthe nephew?

OP, wow what a dick reaction...

I would be dead without having worn a helmet as a kid on my bike. His parents seem irresponsible.

Well, I don't know about the kid, but apparently this thread didn't die in July. (I kind of assume the kid didn't either.)

I don't remember even seeing a bike helmet when I was a kid. A high percentage of the time we got some other appendage on the ground first, a knee, forearm, palm of hand.
Those good times when mom scrubbed the gravel out with a toothbrush........

Same with me, and like others did crazy stupid stuff with our BMX bikes. What probably saved me was our neighborhood backed up to about 50 acres of woods (behind Redmond High School if you know the area) that had miles of trails and jumps and whatever else you needed. We would even duct tape our pellet guns to our bikes and save up fireworks to empty the gunpowder out of for homemade "things". Ripped off wood from a new development and had one hell of a treefort too! Damn those were the days.

Come to think of it, the only time I did see a kid or two with a bike helmet was because they presumably had to wear them in case of a seizure.

Which is quite ironic if you think about it... :hmm:

edit: oh yeah, good luck to the kid op.

The Amish have some good things like that. Not many people in our society have that sense of community. They aren't fat and aren't lazy tits like many of us. Of course, when you can't use gas it means you gotta work, too!

The Amish say wood heat warms you twice. Once when you're chopping in, and once when you're burning it.

As for helmets, I grew up at the height of the baby boom. There were about 30-40 kids within a couple of years of my age within a couple of blocks in our crowded suburbia. We went everywhere by bike, 20+ miles out in the summer on adventures. I don't know of one kid that suffered a severe head injury. Not one.

So that's the bias of my experience. Still, if I had bike-age kids today, they'd be head-strapped or walking.
