10 year old decided that he doesn't need to bike with helmet. Some how he hits the curb today and crack his brain open and it's also swollen. He's in the hospital and may need surgery if the swelling does no go down. Way to go ! He's already border line failing school.. may not need that brain much.

Obviously we ask the parent why isn't he wearing helmet.. answer: he doesn't like to.

Talk about being screwed.. they don't have health insurance. I guess the tax payers are going to pick this one up.

I want to punch people with no health insurance. Especially if you have kids. Idiots.

It is a fucking 10 year old. He's just a kid doing what kids do.

You are a fucktard for 3 reasons:

A) He has to die to win the award and that has not happened.

B) Mocking a seriously injured child simply because a 10 year old boy is doing what a 10 year old boy does and gets hurt in the process.

C) One cannot "crack his brain open"...hell I bet even your 10 year old nephew knows that.

Not wearing a helmet doesn't approach the spectacular idiocy that some Darwin award winner (nominees) have displayed in the past.

You must hate your sibling though to have that attitude about their kid?

/shrug.

Im not exactly happy with his attitude.. we still don't know if he passed 4th grade or not. Waiting for his test results, which is weird because school starts in about 30 days.

His family isn't rich or even well off. For barely passing 4th grade, he demanded a set of beats headphone which he broke in less than 10 days. I had to go exchange the headphone and saw the price tag, 129.99 + tax. His mom makes 900 a month.. that set of beats set them back a lot. Because he wanted them, I had to go to a few targets to exchange them. Gas isn't cheap and certainly taking off during lunch to go to target isn't exactly what I wanted to do.

When you were that age did you wear a helmet?
My guess is you're just a hypocrite.
I didn't. Your comparison of course is absurd. The culture has changed and the safety benefits of them are undeniable. Similarly, if you started smoking 60 years ago, hmm, maybe not so clever. Start today you're an imbecile.

I never wore a helmet as a kid because it wasn't cool, but nobody did, there were no laws for it, hell even professional cyclists weren't wearing helmets for a long time. Now if you don't wear one you're a poser idiot, I don't care of your age. There are some kids in my hood who don't wear helmets and I think the parents are stupid tits.

Technically you can win the award without dying by removing yourself from the gene pool - either by rendering yourself sterile or otherwise preventing yourself from ever breeding. As far as mother nature is concerned, you may as well be dead at that point.

It sounds like OP has a few good reasons to lack sympathy. People like that don't just "catch the stupid" one day; I bet he has been putting up with the parents' dumb asses for years, and that gets really old after a while.

That said, the kid is just 10, how smart were you when you were ten? I know I was beyond clueless. The kid deserves some of the credit for his actions, sure, but I think he deserves a little sympathy too, dumbass punk or no.

1. Bike helmets are required in about half the states:
http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/helmet_laws.html
Based on your IP, if your nephew lives in that state, or most of the neighboring states, his parents should have known it was the law & could have simply used the "I know you don't like it, but it's the law."
2. Saying they're not well off... and a couple posts later, whining about the price of gas to drive to Target?
3. Agreed, you sound kind of callous toward your family, but I understand that if circumstances have been similar over the years, it's kind of natural.
4. I'm really, really annoyed that there are people with children* who don't have health insurance for the kids. There's no excuse.

*I make exceptions for the Amish. They (at least the ones around here) pay their medical bills. Going to a benefit auction for that very purpose tomorrow. Might buy a storage shed or something - great Amish family; I chat with them frequently. One of the daughters cracked her head open, flown by helicopter, emergency surgery, etc. The whole Amish community comes together to help - sort of like an insurance policy - they pool their risks, but don't keep the money quite as liquid, though it only took 2 or 3 weeks to organize the auction.

Just got word, brain is bleeding, surgery is required. NYC helmet is required for under 13.

They dont have health insurance because they can't afford it. Mom makes 900 a month and dad makes 1200 a month. With their living condition, they cant afford insurance nor do their job provide insurance. Both work for small business (1-4 employee).

I said they are not well off so I have to drive around to exchange the headphone and we all know gas price jack up tremendously the past 2-3 weeks.. under 4 buck I dont mind driving around.. im' at 4.39 a gallon here in nyc.. its a fving rip off

his parents couldn't force him to wear a helmet? fail

I can't say how I would raise a kid but when I was a kid, my parent would beat me if I did something wrong.

In this case, the kids are dictating what they want to do, ie not wear helmet.

The other cousins of the family dictates that they are not going to summer school this year and just stay at home and watch tv and surf the web.

Both cases the parent should put their foot down but have not done so.

I mean if you were a parent and your kid decides not to obey you, wouldn't you put your foot down ?

Well, he has to die first. You cant get one without dying.

And....who the hell wore a helmet when they were a kid? I never wore any protective gear and we used to bust our ass all the time. I sliced my leg open on a broken Snapple bottle while Rollerblading. My mom freaked out. My friends thought it was cool that I had stitches.

The Amish have some good things like that. Not many people in our society have that sense of community. They aren't fat and aren't lazy tits like many of us. Of course, when you can't use gas it means you gotta work, too!

I did. I was always doing dumb stuff so I figured I'd better keep it on just in case I laid the bike down while doing 30 around the corner after the huge hill.

Yeah, I've seen this on TV. You gotta wrench the kid onto the ground then pinch their neck with all your fingers, like your fingers are teeth. Then from about 6-12 inches away you just look 'em in the eye until they look away or wet themself. It is all about establishing and maintaining dominance.
