Just started priming again, it did run 1hr, but I stopped it to use my PC. Temps are now 62C with a Vendetta2 and 1200rpm scythe.

What are everyone's VTT and GTL settings? Wondering if playing with those might let me lower the Vcore a bit. (I'm Currently at default VTT and GTL's)

Just wondering, I've heard the Vendettas aren't one of the best air solutions... just a thought. I'll check those settings when I reconfigure my system.

lol? You could probably get almost 4.5G out of 1.39v.

Man, that sounds a little high for volts for a Wolfdale. Specs are 0.85V ? 1.3625V. But then again, he'll probably only be running the CPU for 6 months anyway!

Frankly, I'll be happy with 4.1-4.2 GHz when I run my E8600, considering I have 8 GB RAM and a microATX motherboard. I have in the past proven the system out stable at 8x450 FSB, so I'm pretty confident. I'm going to aim for the best OC I can get without cranking up the voltage more than absolutely necessary.

Very recently, 4 GHz was the Holy Grail of OCing. Now Intel is enabling us to make it routine. Get 'em while you can! Good times, good times.

I'm using the vendetta2, which is a 120mm HS. The original vendetta was a 92mm fan size, and wasn't as good.

Currently, the TRUE, Vendetta2, Xigmatek 1283 are roughly the same in performance, +/- a couple of degrees. The TRUE is a bit better with higher RPM fans (2000rpm), but if you only run a fan at 1000-1200rpm, pretty much all three perform the same.

You should be fine hitting 4.0-4.1 without hardly any (maybe none) voltage increase. I'
ms taying at 4.3Ghz, over that, temps get too high, and I don't want to increase voltage to 1.4V.

My VTT is at 1.3v and GTL is on Auto.

Wow, I thought I was running way out of spec with a 1.39 Vcore...guess I'm going to have to crank her up a bit more.

No seriously, 1.35-1.425 would be my absolute max watercooled. Right now I'm on air and want to make sure I keep the temps down. I'm using the Zalman CNPS9700 NT and I saw max temps of 68c while priming with small FFT's. Under normal gaming I get mid to high 50's max.

I also have a QX9650 and I have to say for my usage I like the sub $300 processor better. At 3.5GHz it is a gaming phenom!

You certainly have a good looking rig there. Amazing how Intel keeps vouchsafing us these sick OCing CPUs. The E8600 looks to be possibly the best ever. 4 GHz on stock? Amazing. Yep, first tweak is to simply make sure the multi is 10x and then run the FSB at 400. Like taking candy from a baby.

Honestly, I wonder why they haven't decided to take some speed-binned chips and market them as 4 GHz CPUs.

I think you have Mod privileges and have been editing my posts or I'm slippin' LOL. I guess the 4.5GHz is such an accomplishment (for me anyway) that I still can't believe it. Hey, at least I'm consistent.

*Disclaimer: From this point forward when you see "3.5" I really mean 4.5. Hehe!!!

etc. etc. etc....

I'll try to get an average Vcore for 4300, 4400, and 4500mhz prime stable. About 60% of the first screenies are Priming too!

Edit: Got the averages

AVG: 4464mhz, 1.336 Vcore

This equals about:
4500mhz 1.36v
4400mhz 1.32v
4300mhz 1.29v
4200mhz 1.25v
4100mhz 1.22v
4000mhz 1.19v

4000mhz may take less than 1.19v and 4500 might take more than 1.36v. These are just averages. I would go ahead and add about +/- .05v to these since these SS's are all of expert overclockers. 4500mhz is typically checking in around 1.39v

because the current E8X00 chips are 3GHz, 3.166 and 3.333GHz. If they release faster dual core chips they would likely be 3.5 and 3.666GHz etc.

the E8400 E0 is out. Couple of people at xtremesystems.org have theirs at 4.5GHz on air. Its $150 at Microcenter.

Nice OC...but are you linpack stable? I can take my 6750 to 3.8 on my board and orthos stable for 12+ hours, but it will fail linpack in less then 15 sec's. Normal full load is about 54c for my system, but with linpack it hits 64C. I have since backed all the way down to 3.55 to be fully stable and not throwing mass volts at everything.

jaredpace...thanks for compiling the list. It proves the E8600 is a nice chip with plenty of headroom!

When I get back on water I'm going to see what 1.42v will get me. Based on what I've seen so far 4.6 prime stable would be a good thing.

My specs are below; I'm experiencing both unacceptable heat and instability running tests at anything beyond 3.85 GHz. I think part of my issue is that I need to use a better thermal paste on my cooler (because I did not have any AS5 lying around, I had to use the stuff in the new cooler's box), but I'm starting to have doubts about my motherboard. Unfortunately, for MicroATX (a form factor that I really like) there isn't quite the selection compared to other enthusiast boards. In my office, a tower is not an option.

Volts are set to 1.3, drops to 1.2 under load.

Another annoyance is that I just don't believe the heat numbers I'm getting - 48C at idle, 70C at load. I use CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro and OCCT (Orthos Prime for overnight tests), and these temps are pretty much the same when I run the CPU at full default, and at all other speeds I've tested. I feel that these numbers are BS, but even if they're actually lower, they're still unacceptably high for OCing. SpeedFan shows temps 4-5 degress lower, but I don't trust those numbers either!

45nm chips appear to run hot. But I'm also not happy with the performance of the cooler. Do the Ruby Orbs/Blue Orbs have a bad reputation?

I'm also wondering if the 8 GB of RAM is the issue.

One thing I may do is (carefully) install a fan controller. Also, AS5 is something that is easily remedied.

The system is "stable" at 3.85 GHz (doesn't crash OCCT) but is running 70C temps under load, so no overnight tests yet.

If I can successfully get the heat down, I'll be happy with the speed I have, but I would like more, since the E8600 CPUs are such champion overclockers. Heck, I'm even thinking of lapping the cooler and the CPU! (I could simply have bought an E0 8400 chip and gotten these speeds for half the price )

Or - dare I say it - my first water kit? Not sure I want to throw more money at this thing. There'd have to be a compelling benefit.

It is running smooth as butter, and for the normal stuff I do it is way overkill. But it would be nice to have a stable 4 GHz system with decent temps. I want this to last a few years.

Honestly, it's not the TIM, it's the heatsink. You need heatpipes and a taller heatsink for 4 Ghz. Well, the heatsink and the µATX case.

45nm chips appear to run hot. But I'm also not happy with the performance of the cooler.

45nm chips run cooler than 65nm's, but they also have less surface area making contact with the heatsink's base, so they're not really any easier to keep cool.

I'm also wondering if the 8 GB of RAM is the issue.

There's only one way to find out. Okay, there's two. You can also crank up your timings to 6-6-6-24, and while it isn't as easy on the northbridge as two sticks, it's much easier on it than four sticks with 5-5-5-15 timings.

Yeah, I think you're right. My choices are limited though; I can't use the Tuniq Towers and such because of my case. I think a couple more options are availble that use heatpipes, though. Swapping the HSF isn't that big a deal.

I am DEFINITELY trying out the timings tweak as soon as I finish typing this

There was a batch of processors that a few users identified as running hotter, than the others. Sorry I can't link to the thread ATM b/c Xtremesystems is down. The users purchased from NewEgg and all received the same FPO/Batch numbers during that certain period of time.

I share that b/c it may help to explain your temps?
