You'll see little gain with Raid...buying quad raptors for Raid 0/1 is just throwing your money out the window.

On a more general note, I used to think it was cool being the top of the heap...but then you realize that it is very transitory, and your money is gone by then. Be smart and go with a more modest system, which will still blow away all of today's games...and save the rest of your money for the new goodies coming out this year (R520, dual AMD desktop cores, etc.). You'll thank me later

Well, it's your hard earned money......

But it's criminal that you didn't spend it more wisely. Sorry

You make me sick.

Anyways its awesome you have that kind of money, but.....

If you want to overclock then why the cpu and board? Overclocking an FX55 wouldnt give you much headroom and on that board you wouldnt get much out of it at all. Where as a DFI board and a 3500+ and you could get about the same result as with the FX55.

As for the graphics and monitor personally i would go with dual 19" LCDs and a single 6800 Ultra you would see about the same performance until you get into the higher resolutions and you would be able to buy dual LCDs for the setup. Trust me dual monitors rock and there is no substitute.

As for the ram i personally see no reason why not to go with 2 gigs i mean ram is like $100 for a gig anymore.

And i agree the raptors are an absolute waste. Just get a single raptor and a couple 200 gig segates.

Lets see i probably just saved you $2000 so go buy yourself a nice laptop and a projector and have some real fun gaming on a 60in screen.

The 3500 and FX55 are in a different league. L2 cache will help for some of his needs.

Woofmeister, I would never reccomend SLI, but I'd get a widescreen. Something with 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 native resolution.

The Sandra scores speak for themselves given you rendering usage.

if youve got that kind of money, i would definitely recommend springing for bigger/better in the monitor department. its hard to go wrong with dual 20"s.

Damn that's pretty expensive... and not practical at all... could have spent 1.6k on a great gaming rig... as if 68fps wasn't good enough for you!

But, as others have said, at the end of the day it is indeed your money and your computer, and definitely good for the people making those components...

That monitor is stylish as hell, one of the best I've seen, but definitely go bigger!!!

Your printer is too cheap to match a $5000 pc.
I would take a set Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultra over the Creatives.
and if you are spending that much on cooling your rig, get a vapochill!!
People get over 3.5GHz on the FX-55 with it, and it's only $800.

That is going to be an impressive rig. It will deserve you bragging rights

I think you'd be better off with HDD's that support NCQ which the Raptors do not. Of course your mobo's chipset will have to support that as well. I am not sure which Opteron boards support NCQ.

I am planning for a Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 250Gb, 7200rpm,16Mb SATA150. This rivals the Raptor in performance and will give you ample diskspace. You could of course still go for a RAID 1, just to be sure. Four of these will produce quite some heat, just like 4 Raptors I imagine. There are other brands that support NCQ, but hardly any with a 16MB buffer which is nice for streaming. If you dislike Maxtor, some here do, look for a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250Gb, 7200rpm, 8Mb, SATA. It has NCQ, but obviously a smaller buffer.

For comparison with the Raptor: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2094
Add to that AT's latest article on dual-core: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2389 NCQ and multitasking go together very well. I'd look into dual proc or at least dual core in your case.

Good luck!

WoW!! .... 15 seconds later ... WoW!!!

Do you know how many $0.99 Jumbo Jacks you could get for that price? Or how many hookers?

Anyway, I get the feeling you have your mind made up already. I have no problem with that, since you've obvious put a bit of research into this. Don't let others force you to second guess yourself. My $0.02: if you're serious about both gaming and video rendering/editing, have you considered getting two dedicate boxes optimized for each? With only one box, encoding time takes away from gaming time.

lol thx for the suggestions guys..

..yeah i was considering NCQ...but i dont think it is supported yet by AMD nforce??

I am going to go with the 21" samsung, better ms responce time anyway...thx for catching that.....

Im going with the RAID 0+1 becuase i need a lot of storage..like i said i am a part time web developer so i store tons and tons of templates, images, recent and past work....ect....ill check out the maxtors and seagates some more.......

Hmm the vaporchill is enticing...i thought it was well over 1200..maybe l8er when i get bored with a measely 3ghz ;-).....and like i said im going with gigabyte because this comp is not mainly for overclocking(if i was and not relying on this computer to be totally stable for some important tasks i would get a 3500 and 256mb of RAM, but like i said i need the stock power, and if i can get more juice out of it all the better), ....and although the DFI board has recieved a lot of attention becuase of its BIOS settings, and great OC's.. the asus and gig board also have achieved awesome oc's....the orginal reference gigabyte sli bored was an oc'ing monster...word is the next revision is going to make up for its less than lackluster ocing....

Anyway while i cant warm up to the idea of dual opertons...i am taking your advice seriously...you guys know best...im just looking to have a little fun, that and something to dr00l at before i go to bed lol......(BTW, considering i am not going to update this comp for a while...i am one to stick with certain games, that and I already have a laptop for my work computer and a projector i got from work as a gift, it is not a waste of money to me...i am going to get my money's worth out of it.....) i still do my taxes on an old 66mhz ibm aptiva and i keep a pentium 3 733mgz around to just plain mess around with....when i ever find the time, work sometimes keeps me for weeks at a time :-(

EDIT: i ditched the zalmon...im going to build my own water system....im researching some parts on frozen cpu now...

That's a real good gaming monitor - not! 20ms response. You could do a lot better with some of the new model around with 8ms and lower response time.

Ribbon could you give me a list for a 5-6k rig was going to buy a G-5 but may see what I can get on a self built PC and run Windows and debian. So far I have a little over 5 k spent waiting for me to hit the buy button on Apples site. Will wait for the Tiger OS to ship with it before I buy or will look hard at what you suggest for a complet system with Monitor.

that pc is a waste of cash and time,
gigabyte doesn't overclock, I have the gbyte a64 s754 version (3200+ / watercooled) and it doesn't work stable pass 2350mhz (ddr500 ram, so ram isnt an issue)

Why would a guy getting a FX55 and 6800U SLI care if it OCs?

A. He's going to be CPU limited with 6800U SLIs
B. He's going to have such fast performance that it won't matter at all if he OCs- not like he's buying some $200 card and hoping to squeeze 12X10 out of it?

Gimme a break.
