My new hard drive is going slow!

I just got a new Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM ATA/66 hard drive and it is going SLOW! I ran a benchmark in Sandra and it was 4000(something). Slighly faster then the IDE 4GB w/o DMA. My old hard drive ran this slow too but I just thought it was the hard drive. I got a new ATA/66 IDE cable and it is still going the same speed...SLOW. I was reading another thread where downloading the 4in1 drivers fixed it. What do those drivers do? Aren't they for the t-birds? My athlon is the old slot 1 and I'm not even sure if I have a VIA chipset. I looked on my motherboard but it's covered up with the heatsink. If I have a VIA chipset then do I need those drivers? Please help! Thanks!

Shawn

P.S. Could my zip drive be slowing the hard drive down? It's set as slave on IDE. I just disconnected and it's the same speed.

Suggest you read your motherboard book or look it up online and find out what chipset your running.....

The manual says it uses the AMD 750 chipset. Whatever the hell that is. Well, I have never heard of it.

AMD 750 chipset is the chipset that AMD originally made for the Athlon.

Do you have DMA enabled? Are you sure it is hooked up to the ATA/66 connector? I don't even know if that mobo has ATA/66 judging by the picture of it found here.

Ummm...let us know.

"My new hard drive is going slow! "

Now is that politically correct? A better way to say it is "your hard disk is informationally challenged"

enable DMA...plain and simple...

what mobo are u using?...if it's using an AMD southbridge, don't download the via drivers, obviously...if it's using a via southbridge, download only the via ide bus master driver (ver. 3.11) from www.viahardware.com/download

run the via utility and enable dma mode for yoru drive....

your performance problem should be solved.

doesn't Maxtor ship some of their drives in "quiet mode" which can be removed by an utility (thereby increasing performance) on their website??
still wouldn't fully explain his poor hdd performance though.

DMA IS enabled! How would I know if it's using a via southbridge? I doubt it is. Click "My Cool Rigs!" for my system info. Is there something wrong with the controler on the motheboard? My Maxtor 8.4GB ATA/33 5400RPM ran this slow too so I thought it was just the hard drive. Also I did a benchmark a long time ago on my cdrom and was a little slower then the 8x cd-rom on there and it is a 40x. Should I buy a ATA/66 or ATA/100 card? Please Help!

shawnmos,

I realize this may have nothing whatsoever to do with your situation, but thought I'd post it in case there might be a parallel between scenarios.

A friend of mine just received a Dell Dimension 4100. (Please, hold on to the rotten tomatoes and cans. She's a business-person with a one-person office, not a technogeek.) It was equipped with one of the recent Maxtor 7200 rpm drives, but, unlike your system, running on an Intel "800 series" integrated chipset and an Intel "Integrated ATA Controller".

In the W2K Pro Device Manager, the primary IDE channel held on this drive, as Master naturally. Though AutoDetect was on and the Slot 0 Transfer Mode drop-down was set to "DMA if available", the Current Transfer Mode was shown as PIO Only. Once I located the appropriate ATA Integrated Controller Driver and Integrated Chipset Driver and installed them (Can anyone explain why an OEM of Dell's reputation ships a system like this out still missing these drivers TWO MONTHS after the drivers came out???) the Device Manager stopped showing this drive as an IDE drive. That's right. Now it claims it's a SCSI drive. It also runs a hell of a lot faster than it used to run.

I realize that you are a) using a different chipset, b) a different controller (I'm presuming here.), and c) a different OS. Nonetheless, might there be a parallel that's specific to the brand of hard drive? I have no experience with the VIA chipset or Win ME, but I can't help wondering if you might need the lates VIA drivers, and possibly new ATA controller drivers, to make this drive work properly for you. I know that there's a difference in the situations, also, in that you show DMA as being enabled, but who knows if that indication is actually accurate? You'd have to wonder from the performance results you're getting.

Hope you find a solution.

Regards,
Jim

Hello,

Right-click "My Computer", go to properties, click on the "Performance" tab, and let us know if anything is running in MS-DOS mode. Also, make sure your hard drive is set to "Master" and not "Cable select" or "Single Drive". (<-- directions for Win98, not sure if it has changed for WinME)

Mark.

Nothing is running in msdos mode because windows me doesn't support dos and no longer loads the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. The drive is set for master.

jaywallen: I am running the drivers that came with my motherboard. I would download new drivers but I don't think there are any or at least not any that I could find on AMD's site.
