Well I read up for a bit, and I came up with this for my PC on mwave. I am obsessed with MMORPGs, and I think the 9600XT will be able to handle it. I can go up to about 800 dollars total for a PC. Does this look good? Is this the best setup for the money?

DO NOT HIT THE BUY BUTTON!

There are much better alternatives.

Example:

A64 3000+ s939 90nm: $150
Asus A8V Deluxe: $130
512MBx2 Mushkin PC3200: $140

Replace the CPU/Motherboard/RAM with:

Chaintech VNF3-250 $75
Athlon 64 2800+ $130
Corsair Value 1GB (512MBx2) $150

Savings of roughly $75 over the items you selected.

And then add that $75 you saved on the above items to the video card budget and get a XFX 6600GT ($225).

So you're getting a MUCH faster video card, and a faster CPU, for the same amount of money.

This is all from newegg, as of about 5 min ago, seems me and jpeyton think a like, for about 30$ more you coudl add in a DVD burner and not that CD burner if you wanted, you dont actually NEED a gig of ram either, that would save you another 80$ or so

AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail - $128
CHAINTECH nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 Athlon 64 CPU, Model "VNF3-250 - $76
Mushkin Dual Pack 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - 147$
ANTEC Solution Series Super Mid Tower Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "SLK3700AMB" - 65$
Western Digital Special Edition 120GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD1200JB - $80
Lite-On White 52X32X52 Internal EIDE CD-RW Drive, Model SOHR-5238S, - 25$
XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, Dual DVI, AGP 8X, Model "PVT43AND" 240

Total 761$

Wow, I think I am going to order exactly that. You guys are awesome. I just got saved from screwing myself.

I just read several reviews on the Chaintech board and every single site said that it was a great board. Man now I am getting excited.

shipping on that might put you over 800 but thats the best i coudl do in 10 min, seeing as you mainily play MMORPGs you dont NEED a gig of ram 512 will be fine, bringing your total closer to 700$ and if you find out you need/want more ram it is really easy to pick up later

you can change thoes colors and such i just grabbed the first one, they are all basically the same price for the other colors, case and CDrom drive
you might wanna see if you can find a 8x DVD Burner, they are great even if you just use them for Data backup, newegg only seems to be selling the newer 12x and 16x drives that cost more

The only downside to that board is that it does not support Cool'n'Quiet, but otherwise it's a good board.

I would hold off on your order for one more day so you can get some more input from the day crowd here.

hi,
i second the call for upgrading to a dvd burner - if you check the hot deals forums, you can get a good one one for ~$50. the incremental cost is pretty low over the cdrw and you have a lot more versatility.
hot deals link
have fun.

Go with the $761 setup, it's a great system for such little money and it will run your games very well.

I was under the impression that if the original poster got the 2x512Mb memory and wanted to add memory, he'd 1) have to add 2 sticks because the dual channel memory controller insists upon 2 or 4 sticks, and 2) that if he had 4 sticks that the board would force the memory into DDR333 mode, not DDR400. Or am I mistaken?

I am putting my order in tomarrow! Yes!

I am ordering the exact setup Anubis suggesting, with exception to the case.

One more question:

Is it worth the extra 15 bucks to go to an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ instead of the 2800+?

1) The A64 2800 is a socket 754 CPU, meaning its single channel, but i don't think that the dual channel A64's insist on 2 or 4 sticks anyways.
2) Im not sure about this board, but I know that on most A64 boards you can manually force it to go back to DDR400 mode with 4 sticks of ram

Don't rule out a SFF choice and one with possibly more performance for not much more...

Shuttle SK83G $200
AMD 64 3000+ $150
Corsair VS 1GB PC3200 $150
ATI 9800 Pro $200
Maxtor 120GB SATA $85
Lite On 52X32X52X16 $36

$821

If anything go with the 9800 Pro over the 9600. You'll thank yourself in the long run. It's not that much more now a days and well worth it.
