Hi all!
Just received my new HP Envy-15 laptop this week. When I was younger, I always dreamed about owning one of Raul Sood's monster, Voodoo PC machines. But as lust-worthy as they were, the price was way too far out of reach. But because of this, I decided to look into building a "botique-PC" on my own, picked up Anand's book (which became my bible to this new & wonderful hobby) and I haven't looked at another PC manufacturer since, at least when it came to desktops. But laptops, they're a different story...
I've spent the last year working on a 13" MacBook as my primary laptop. And while I loved the aluminum uni-body construction and how nicely the whole thing played with my iPods & iPhone, I just couldn't get used to Mac OSX (Snow Leopard) and lamented the fact that I "only" had a Core2Duo 2.0 under the hood. To top it all off, Windows 7 came out and made me believe that the boys in Redmond really listened to us enthusiasts.
Which brings me to today: HP's Envy 15-1050NR. It runs Intel's i7-720 QM CPU running at 1.6Ghz. It has 6GB of DDR3 RAM. A 500GB 7200rpm HD. Dedicated ATI 4830 graphics. And a back-lit LED 15.6" Brite-View screen that runs at a full Hi-Def resolution of 1920x1080. Not to mention that it runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, so I'm feeling right at home. In short, this thing makes my MacBook look like dog-poo.
When HP acquired Voodoo PC, I thought it was going to be the deat of one of the most innovative builders out there. And while the Blackbirds are no longer being made, it's nice to see that HP has given the Envy laptops the classy feel and top-notch features Voodoo brought to their machines. So,while it doesn't say Voodoo on the case anymore, I'm happy to report that the Kick-Ass Voodoo DNA HP likes to throw into their high-end machines is alive and well!
Pricey, yes. But oh so worth it to get back to saying "I'm a PC."
