So I finally got the gun I've wanted for a long time. It is a Bushmaster XM15 M4 style Carbine AR-15 with the A3 (flattop) upper receiver (model PCWA2X 14M4IZ). It is a post-ban style weapon, since NY still has an assault weapons ban in place.

This means the telestock is fixed (pinned to the buffer tube), and the muzzle break (not flash suppressor) is pinned and welded to the barrel, and that I can only have 10 round magazines if made after September 13th, 1994. This creates a loophole though, which means if I purchase 30 round magazines (in fact, up to 100) if made before September 13th, 1994; it is perfectly legal.

Sorry if the pics are crappy, my camera isn't the best, and my lighting isn't the best.

Inside it's home
Locked (sorry about my toe)
Unlocked Ejector side
Gun and magazine separate
With Magazine Ejector port side
With Magazine Eject port side (closed Ejector Port)
With Magazine opposite side

Nice.

I just got myself an AK-47 (WASR-10)

Cool feeling, isn't it?

Sucks that you got a postban that is still limmited like that  The AW bans are so so so stupid.

Where in the state are you? I'm looking to get a firearm & hopefully a license to carry in the future, as moving back out into a sh1tty neighborhood by myself isn't something I'm falling in love with.

Yeah, it's a real cool feeling. I put 150 round through it today at the range, and the felt recoil is a lot less than I expected (I knew not to expect much). Out of 150 rounds fired, I had 4 issues. 3 were failures to strip from the magazine, and 1 was where a spent brass cracked in to two either when fired or extracted, and half got caught between the loading round, and the upper receiver. Freaked me out, but with the help of the range officer, I was able to fix it, and keep on shooting.

I attribute this to the cheap ammo I got, and dont think it had anything to do with the rifle itself. I got 1000 rounds of American for 200 dollars, so I bought it. 4 failures out of 150 isn't too bad anyway, and I can live with that till I finish them.

The only complaint I have is that cleaning is a bitch. Since its direct gas impingement, basically all of the carbon from the round goes back in to the upper receiver, and gets on everything. When I pulled the firing pin out, it was black, when it's supposed to be steel colored. A little CLP, and some TLC, and it was good as new.

Yeah, AW bans suck, but what are you gonna do? The second amendment means nothing nowadays. Some anti-gun nut decided to call anything that looks military an assault weapon, even though they aren't selective fire. I don't understand how a 6 position telestock makes it assault. All it does is make it more comfortable for me to use. A flash suppressor I can understand for range shooters, but for hunters, it helps them not be seen by the hunted animal. Whatever, I bent, and got the gun I wanted. The nice thing about the AR is if the AWB is ever lifted in NY, I can go out and buy a new stock for not too much money. Only thing that sucks is if I want a flash suppressor, I gotta get a whole new barrel. And like I said, since there is a loophole with magazines, I can get magazines I want with a slight premium (around 5-6 over new 30 round magazines when not bought in huge bulk).

I am from Long Island (Nassau county), but did not buy the gun there. It was special ordered out of state for me since I payed about 200 less (not including tax, so like 300-400 with tax) than I would have if bought in NY. PM me if you want more information. If you don't mind getting the gun from a dealer in North Carolina, and then have a FFL transfer done, then let me know and I will give you his info. Very pleasant person to deal with, and made the whole experience of purchasing enjoyable. If you get a gun like I did, where NY adds a huge premium, you can save a lot, since the gun will be cheaper, and their isn't tax since it's an out of state purchase.

Before I bought it down here, I looked in to some dealers on Long Island, and found one that wasn't too bad, but still more expensive. PM me for his info too.

I'm from Oceanside. Do you go shooting? I need to find good (aka cheap and at least 25 yards) ranges that let you shoot .223 either FMJ or JHP. LI Shooting Center lets you shoot .223 but at 10 dollars every 30 minutes, which means they ain't getting my business. I know there's an outdoor range I want to check out in Brookhaven (Long Island Shooting Range). They aren't that expensive, have long outdoor range up to 200 yards.

Do you have any suggestions? I don't know if the Nassau County range in Uniondale lets you shoot .223, but I know you can't shoot FMJ (don't know about JHP).

A flash suppressor I can understand for range shooters, but for hunters, it helps them not be seen by the hunted animal.
FWIW it doesn't really do anything on the receiving end. It's more for preserving the shooters night vision.

The ammo you were shooting was Federal American? Suprised to see split cases, usually old crap does that, American is decent stuff.

Not Federal American, American Ammunition (A-MERC). I did some reading after my incident, and saw that people have had mixed reviews. I was just glad my gas tube wasn't damaged. As long as my rifle will live to fire another day, I don't care if it jams here and there if I save money just for range shooting.

Now if I was in competition, or whathaveyou, I would definitely get better ammo, but for range shooting, it's not worth paying for really good ammo.

My new toy

I've always heard you're not supposed to play with guns

I don't play, hence the reason all the pictures without the magazine present had the lock on, and if you look closely, the magazine is unloaded, and the action is open, and the safety is on.

I know you are being critical of me for calling it a toy, but in the proper hands, it is a toy. A toy, when not speaking of children, can be described as an object one derives pleasure from. Some people call their cars a toy, but you should not play with that since you could run someone over. The same goes for guns. If handled with respect, it is harmless.
