My next system begins: Popo
The "I've been saving much too long for this" PC.

I have posted a very detailed, very researched, very time consuming thread in the SteamPowered.com Hardware forum and the TGN Hardware forum. The formatting here is very different because it is not vBulletin, and it does not have color formatting and the list formatting is different. Please just use the link to see it there, you don't have to register to view. Once you look at the post, you may come back here to reply if you'd like. I could really use the opinion of the experts over here at these forums.

Thanks!

I have started to take the price of my processor into consideration. Will I see a significant performance decrease if I downgrade one or two models?

And nobody has given me any tips on the hardware choices I have multiple of and haven't decided on yet. I have a lot of questions on my memory and my mobo, please look at the thread and give input.

get an Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego core. Its what I will be using in my new rig. Stock, its about the same as an Athlon FX-53 except a bigger cache. You can easily overclock it way past fx-57 speeds.

The FX-57 is the same processor, except the stock speed is a small amount higher.

don't get the FX series, period. way too overpriced. if you overclock, you'll get the same speeds as the FX series. get a 3700 or 4000 San Diego or go with the X2 3800-4400. no need to go all out when you plan on keeping this for 3 years. think about it, is 200MHz gonna do anything in a year or more from now? besides, if you get the DFI (get SLI just to be safe) then you have an awesome overclocking board, meaning your X2 3800, 4200 or 4400 will easily be able to reach the 4800 speeds. ram i'm not too sure about. good choice on the video card. don't get the raptor. get a new SATA II hard drive w/16mb cache. there's the maxtor maxline and western digital CAVIAR SE16 i believe

Why does everyone use the "you can overclock it to the speeds of the 4800" as an argument. Yes, you can! But you can also overclock the 4800! I bet you can't overclock it to certain speeds the 4800 can overclock to! Yes, I'll look into it, and see if the extra MHz is noticable and worth it, but that argument is rediculous IMHO.

Yes, but chances are you can save $300-500 on a cpu alone and have something that will be about as good as the processors you had picked out. Sure, your oc'd 4800 might be one or two hundred MHz faster than a lesser chip oc'd, but is that few hunderd MHz going to make that much of a difference when your already buying high end tech? Honestly, if your selecting from near $1000 cpu's why are you so worried about which to buy? Apparantly money isn't much of an issue here if your looking to spend up to $2500.(if it is then good god your nuts)

My advice to end with is not to buy the absolute top of the line chips. The price to performance ratio is rediculous.

for instance:

Athlon x2 4800+ $884 2.4ghz
Athlon x2 4200+ $473 2.2ghz

you would pay $411 more for 200mhz and 1mb caches.

Also, for a video card suggestion. Go for a 7800gtx. Buy one now, and later on buy another to run in SLI.

I'd spend $1500-2000, to get a

4000+ or 4600+ X2
7800GTX
2 GB RAM

to run at stock speed.

Put the other $1,000 in an INGDirect or Emigrant account and earn some interest while you enjoy a perfectly good system that does everything except give you bragging rights.

Not something I'd pay for.

I could buy a gold-dipped diamond-encrusted blingPC if I really felt like it but I'd rather keep the money in mutual funds and use my P4 3.2C and 6800 for another year.
