Here's my setup. I've got one computer, Win2k hooked up to a cable connection. There's a USB NIC connected to it, which is connected to a hub. There is the NIC from my laptop (Win98) connected to the hub also. From my Win2k I can ping both myself (192.168.0.1) and the laptop (192.168.0.2). (BTW win2k internet sharing is turned on). From my laptop, I can only ping itself (192.168.0.2). But if i ping www.microsoft.com, it'll resolve it but that its. Any ideas why this isn't working?.. Thanks

Strange that you cannot ping the 2k box from your laptop. But first off www.microsoft.com will never respond to a ping. try a different address.

yea your right bout that one..it was after i put in the domain name in the web browser when it resolved. could this be a problem with USB NIC? i know the laptop NIC works cuz i've hooked it up to other computers w/o a problem.

I get the impression that the cable modem and the 2 computers are connected to the hub. If that is the case you don't need ICS on the Win2k machine.

i can't ping www.yahoo.com either. i ran tracert for www.yahoo.com and it found the IP, but it can't go any further than that. The DNS servers are the @home DNS servers.

also to rule out the USB NIC problem, I removed the USB NIC and plugged in a regular NIC and it STILL doesn't work!

Here is the million dollar question: Obviosly you can hit the DNS server for lookups, but can you ping your DNS server?

What error message do you get when you ping?

Timeout? Maybe his IPstack has a few problems (seen this before, most applications work perfectly but the ping.exe program is from another stack version). What is even more strange is he can't ping the 2000 box.

My brain hurts, time for beer and NO NAPKINS. route-map no synchronization Q921 set for this no that but except this prefix lengh le 32 next-hop no secondary AS-path;lkasjf;laksjf;lkasjdf;lkasjdlfk;ajslkfja;lskjf;lasjf;lkasjdfl;kajsf

okay..i cannot ping the DNS server. i've plugged in my laptop (same settings i put it on DHCP) to another server and it works no prob. i plug the same laptop into this win2k machine and then i get nothing. whenever i ping it's just a "request timed out."

so, since the laptop works with the same settings, i'm ruling out the laptop as the problem. i've tried two different nics, so i'm ruling out the hardware on my win2k machine. so now the prob could either lie in the hub (i doubt since it's brand new) or it could lie in my win2k software.

now if the problem is in my win2k settings, i really don't know what is wrong with it. maybe it would be related to the problem i get when i open up many many resource hoggin applications. whenever i do that (ie photoshop) my internet cuts out. mIRC gives me a message of buffer something (don't remember too clearly). but as soon as i close the big program, the internet works again. weird huh?

well they may be related or not. dunno. i jus wanna get this laptop hooked up!

I would try removing and reinstalling the network protocols and the NICs in the Win2k machine.

Is the other server you plugged into running ICS like your win2k box? Can you compare their settings?

Weird. Now that I'm really confused, I would do this:

Remove your ICS and then reboot. Check your event log to see if anything network-related failed to start. Then enable ICS for your dialup connection and reboot again. Check your event log and see if something hosed.
