Back in 2006 I worked for a catering company. I worked there for just about 5 years. Me and the owners (it was real small) got along real well. I worked in the warehouse, and at the events. I was the "go-to" guy. They paid well, especially for my age, and treated me really well. One year and nine months ago I moved to Utah (from California), I haven't really talked to them since.
Yesterday they were working an event with a bunch of wineries. This co-worker of mine, Phil, had heard from one of the wineries that they were holding a fund raiser for a boy with my name. Apparently *I* had a stroke and required a bunch of medical attention. So he told his co-workers and the owners, who told my parents, and everyone else I knew back then.
The owners of the company left a message on my parents phone saying something to the effect of "We support you 100%, we will do everything we can to help illusion88 out. We will hold a fund raiser of our own. I hope everything is ok, we love illusion88, we hope he recovers" etc. etc.
About 45 minutes ago I get a frantic call from my parents. After assuring my mother that everything is ok, she starts accusing me of lying and hiding "my injury" from them. Which I find hilarious because my parents would be the first ones to know if I needed support. They thought I had had an injury involving my head, which isn't unlikely giving the sports I participate in. So after much assuring, talking to my father and my twin sister, they believe me. My sister is coming out to visit next weekend and has been instructed to make sure I am in perfect health.
I call my old boss and leave a message saying "everything is OK. I'm fine. what is going on. I'm not dead or hurt. I need answers." She calls me about 2 minutes later (probably screened her call and my number was unknown to her). She explains that one of my co-workers had heard about this boy who got into an accident or had a stroke. The boy had the same name as me! So she tells everyone about it and thus starts this rumor about how I am hurt and need help. Apparently they broke down in tears and decided to do something about it. They had already called wineries, asking if they could use their grounds for a fund raiser! They were going to hold a funeral for me if I was dead. They fully supported any need I had. I couldn't believe the amount of support and love they still have for me, even after so many years gone by (at least it feels like a lot).
I feel loved.
So I call my parents back, and explain the situation. We all have a laugh about it, and all is well.
Cliffs:
- My folks get a message from an old employer saying I had a terrible accident or a stroke
- Hilarity ensues
- I call employer about the message
- Hilarity ensues
-I call parents, and we laugh some more
I'm fine BTW
