Real advice would be telling people to pay off their credit cards to keep their score high. Also limit hard checks like....mortgages

OP is exactly the perfect specimen banks want. Unwilling to pay in full, yet not a threat to actually default. The easy interest money.

Yes I elected to float 5k over to next year.
( 2 months of balance )
It's cheaper than the 10 percent hit to the IRS on another withdrawal on this year.
( about a third of which I get back next year )
January is a new year.

Wow... you charge $8,000 to your credit card and pay it off every month? That's a lot of hookers and blow, ain't it?

no, this was a particularly expensive month, usually I charge about 4k to this card. Had to pay for car repair, swimming lessons for kids, dental visit for the family. Not like next month is going to be better, need to pay for winter tires, brake flush, brake job, tranny flush. And wife's Amazon bonanza.

It's been a bad three months... Burned through 60k

This thread reminded me to go take advantage of a new CC offer of $200 off for spending $500 in 3 months. Bonus feature: no foreign transaction fees and no annual fees - will serve as a nice backup for when I go to the UK in December. Free money since I'm in the pay off balance in full each month camp.

No forex is a good feature. We here in commie Canada don't get much CC perks and I am too lazy to get one with free forex since I online shop in USA.

^^^ I'm trying to time when to take another offer like that. Most of them also are 0 interest for the first 24 months. I have a couple of larger purchases to make and the $200 off and no interest will be a big help. But I'll probably wait until March or later.

You really should get a second card to improve your credit score, though. You don't have to use it frequently, it just needs to be there.
I only have two cards: the rewards card I use for everything and the back up card I use once a year to keep it open and when the rewards card number gets stolen. I pay off the entire balance every month, paid off my mortage over ten years ago, have no other debt, and credit of the gods. Paying interest is slavery.

That's Canadian dollar so that's like $1k US dollar.

I also have $8k Amex payment due in 2 days. Then $20k+ Amex payment due next month. All this only makes up small portion of my total credit utilization so my scores really don't get affected much. If this was my only card, my scores would get killed. It's why people should have multiple cards with high credit limits so this kind of stuff won't affect them.

I got this Amex Platinum card couple months ago. I should have over 400k Amex points by next month once they receive my payment. Good for couple free airline tickets. Credit is a game.

I was mortgage free for like six months in 2011, then wife decided we needed to move...

I bought this place with cash from selling my previous place. No mortgage for going on 25 years.

That's the one thing most of the analyst sites say is a problem ... no real estate loans secured by property.

I am a pauper compared to Ponyo.
Hah! I bypassed the plastic and just paid Tesla $35K from my bank account. How's that for paying a bill? Of course I still have to bring the credit union check for $40K to Tesla next Saturday, though.

Aren't we all.

Wondering if i should get another card after reading this thread. The one i have has a small limit but i hardly ever use it. I'm a cash person for everyday things & haven't had a problem getting a loan in a long time.
Seriously, i rarely spend over $200/300 a year on my credit card.

I still remember a former corworker from like 18 years ago telling me one night that his plans were to stick it to 'the man' by trying to owe as much money before dying as he could. Given I have no children, family or heirs, I often contemplated do this.

Yes. Get a rewards type card that pays you 3-5% for those everyday purchases. Reap the rewards. Some only pay 1%, but that's still better than nothing.

I'd post a link that would get us both a cash bonus, but they don't allow that here.

Depending on how much you spend a month you may be able to do better than $200. I'll often check out this site for the best options when I'm ready for a new CC (Every 2-3 months or so). The offers have come down a bit for straight cash back (or gone up in spending requirements) but there are still some decent $500 options (and some 'points' cards are actually straight statement credits like this one)

Eh... I try to avoid cards that will have annual fees in the future, just because I know that I'll have to cancel them at some point.
