My Opteron 170 arrived

I just ordered one Opteron 170 boxed before it vanishes also.

I have a X2 3800 boxed not opened, I decided to return it and try the Opteron.
It is more expensive, but cheaper than the X2 4400.

I know some people think the 9x is a better deal, but it is not available for me. The 170 is and it has the 10x multiplier.

I hope the Opteron will clock well, otherwise I will feel like a fool.....

It should arrive Thursday or Friday. As soon as I install, I will let you know how it performs. I have a new Thermalright SI-120 waiting for it.

I have a Typhoon also, but not willing to go through the install process again. Too risky for the mainboard (very difficult to secure the bolts on the DFI).

just ordered a OEM Opteron 170 from Monarch for $346 after a $10 off coupon. was panicking by the storm on the 165 and 140-series still need to sell off some parts on ebay, buy mobo/psu/vid card.

If I may, I would suggest a DFI NF4 mobo and an Enermax PSU.

The DFI N4 mobo clocks like no other. I came from a MSI and my CPU did much better on the DFI.

I just ordered an OEM 170 myself about an hour ago. Didn't really want to take a chance with those disappearing too, and $356 for the OEM is not too bad. Could have gotten the retail box for $40 more, but I wanted to use an aftermarket heatsink anyway. It's not like Monarch's prices for the 165 (when they had them in stock), where the retail box was only $12 more than the OEM... (Plus the 10x multiplier on the 170 should give some flexibility in overclocking, and not having to use HTT speeds near or over 300.)

Anyways I'm looking forward to seeing more results, and providing my own once I get my CPU and motherboard!

Current OC settings (currently running 2x Prime95)

CPU: Opteron Dual Core 170
Stepping: CCBWE 0534SPMW
Overclocked speed: 2.6GHz
CPU voltage: 1.47 volts (CPU-Z)
Cooling: Thermalright XL-120 with 120mm Enermax fan
Idle temps: 39 degrees
Load temps: 52 degrees
Motherboard: DFI NF4 SLI_DR BIOS 623-2
Ram: OCZ4002048ELDCPC, Platinum EL
Ram size: 2048 (2 x 1024Mb)
Ram timings: 2.5-3-3-7
Ram divider: 5:6 (216MHz)
Ram voltage: 2.7 volts

On first boot I went directly to 2.4GHz at default vcore (1.33V). It was stable.
Went later to 2.7GHz but had to increase vcore to 1.45V. It goes into Windows but Prime 95 fails in a few minutes. Tried also 1.50V but it fails in 12 minutes (core 1 seems to be the weaker one).

I don't wanna go beyond 1.5V. For the moment I will burn at 2.6 GHz / 1.47V

I will try also a DFI NF4 Expert tomorrow or during the week. I have also to properly install the SI-120, I didn't use Artic Silver (because I will be switching to the Expert)- just normal white thermal paste.

I have a Big Typhoon also, but not willing to go through the install process again. Too difficult/risky. I don't think the SL-120 is much behind it anyway.
