No one can really tell you how high it will go. Since it depend on the stuff you have and the chip itself. So put it in and see what you get.

I certainly hope so,a 747 goes 600mph.

You should get at least 2133mhz out of it easy.

you will definitely get 2.13ghz out of it...thats only 133fsb

ive had 4 different 1.6's and they all did that EASY and STABLE at default voltage

dont be scared to push it...just reset the CMOS and try again

post up your results, we are always curious to know

Have the same fpo/batch # here and so does my brother in law (ordered at the same time - newegg).

Both of us get 2.4 no problem on Asus P4b266-c boards. Voltage 1.675 for me and for him 1.65 works.
Havn't tried any higher. Stock cooling Im seeing 28/49C under load..perfectly stable, havnt tried higher. Using AS1 here but
he is using the default foil that came on the HS and is getting better temps. Might try re-applying grease.

Good luck, looks like you have a good one.

I just built a 1.6A box yesterday, I got it up to 2.351 Ghz... that's 147 FSB at the default vCore, but try as I might, it won't post at any higher than that, even if I up the vCore to 1.7 which is the max that my MoBo will give me.
Any sugestions? Here are my specs:

Retail P4 1.6A @ 2.351 ( 147 FSB, Mem ratio 1:1 )
stock HS/F with Artic Silver 3
ASUS PS333 mobo
Micron PC2700 DDR (256 MB)
ASUS GeForce 3 Ti-200 64M (I also aplied AS3 here )

Is it a limitation of my CPU that it won't post at any higher FSB even at 1.7v or am I missing something ?

thanx, it's nice to jump on the Northwood bandwagon

Homebrew--
I just got a P4 1.6A from newegg, and I have a P4B266 in the retail box. I have ordered some AS3, but I haven't fully decided to use it yet. Everyone swears by Arctic Silver, but sometimes I wonder how much difference it makes on the P4 with the Integrated Heat Spreader. Thermal paste would certainly be more of a bottleneck on an Athlon, with a small core--and most tests show that there is some benefit to using it with an Athlon CPU.

However, with the P4, I wonder just how bad the standard foil pad is. Seems like several people have obtained good results with it, and you and your brother-in-law seem to have shown that there may not be a huge difference.

I'd like to use my AS3, but there's no going back once I scrape the thermal pad off. I like to get the best performance out of my equipment, but I'm also not the type that's going to be peeling off my heatsink every few weeks/months to look at things and re-apply AS. The thermal pad supposedly makes a mess once you use it, but I don't intend to ever take the heatsink off after I install the CPU in this motherboard! Plus, the AS3 makes kinda of a mess when you put it on--so there's mess either way

Do you and your brother-in-law have the same case/cooling fan setups? What about ambient temps? If these things are similar, seems like the thermal pad may be as good as AS1--which would be pretty good by most people's reckoning it seems. AS2/3 only seems to be a few degrees better than AS1 in most circumstances.

Striker -
I would give the foil a try, kind of wish I stuck with it myself. Comparatively both my b-i-l and myself are running the same case temps and 4 case fans (panaflo's). He is seeing 5c over ambient and Im 7c over ambient at idle, load temps similar results. Tried re-applying AS three times (first time showed uneven grease pattern on heatsink). We both have Enermax PSU's and Chieftec tower cases.
Either my HS isnt sitting perfect or it requires a thicker layer of AS than Im used to, unlike Athlons with their ultra thin layer. Dunno, might try lapping also.

If for some reason the foil isn't what you expect I hear it comes off with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover and a little elbow grease.
Either way things are completely stable even with the higher temps but it's just one of things that bugs me

Just wanted to clarify something that might be confusing. Although Im running .025v higher that doesn't seem to make any difference in temps.
We compared both systems at 133fsb and 1.55v and temp differences between AS and foil were the same as above.

Also the last time I applied AS it was a thick layer and confirmed it had even spread/contact with the heatsink.

Thanks for update. This is good info. Most people just say "AS rulez", or something like that. As you suggested, I think I might give the foil a try. Seems like some rubbing alcohol will get it off of the CPU, if necessary, and lapping the heatsink will take care of that side of things if I decide to give the AS3 a whirl later...

I just got one of the new Antec Performance Plus cases (PLUS660), which comes with the True330 PSU. I had looked at the Enermax units for a long time, but decided to roll the dice with the new Antec model. Thinking of replacing the Antec case fan with a Panaflo L1A or possibly a PC Power & Cooling Silencer or three

yeah, snell change the mem to 4:3, seems like yours is memory restricted, not CPU

and also, its good etiquette (spelling?) to not ask questions in someone elses thread

this is gsethi's thread, answer his question guys

Trying to overclock it with standard heatsink/fan with default voltage.

1st try: FSB = 110, works perfect at 1.76Ghz
2nd try: FSB = 133, used divider for memory and apg/pci bus to keep them at normal speeds. 2.12 Ghz perfect
3rd try: FSB = 140, memory @ 280, agp/pci @ 35/70, 2.24 Ghz boots in windows.
4th try: FSB = 150 memory @ 300, agp/pci @ 37/74, 2.40 Ghz boots to windows. VOILA. CPU @ 34 - 35 degree Celcius
Trying 5th: FSB = 155, its booting its booting its booting, YAYAYAYAY, GOAL GOAL GOAL........right into windows, no errors, nothing, everything at default voltage.......cpu temp = 35 - 36 degree celcius. YAYAYA Running @ 2.48 Ghz.

Should i try 160 next or what ?

now how do i test the CPU temperature and where do i get Prime 95 and Sisoft Sandra to test stability ?
want to do this before trying next higher FSB. (~155 or ~160)

Running:
Retail p4 1.6a
Gigabyte GA-8IRXP
384 Samsung DDR PC 2100

I need to find out my CPU temp and run Prime, where do i get those ?

Direct link to Prime95
Homepage

Just extract it and run it, no installation necessary. Don't register, just click overclocker or whatever. Then go to options and click torture test. Watch your voltages and Temps. I haven't seen any other program do such a thorough job of stressing a system (sans 3d card). This will crash pretty much anything if there is a problem. Picks up problems Sandra won't crash on. You'll probably have to bump the voltage to run at 155 stable. Maybe you'll be lucky and won't have to. If it runs for a couple of hours it should be fine. If there's going to be a major problem I've found that it'll get goofy in the first few minutes. Run it overnight and if it shows 0 errors then you should be good to go. Just click file/stop to get a report of how long it ran and how many errors/problems it found.

no go at default voltage for 2.6 Ghz. back to 2.40 Ghz.

one question......during POST, does your CPU shows the CPUID and Patch # ?

Thanks

about 2 min into Prime 95, on Test 6 right now.....CPU running at full load at default voltage.....FSB = 150 Mhz......Temp @ 44 celcius now......is it high ?

UPDATE: on Test 12 now........temp stable between 44-46 degree celcius.
voltage as follows:
+12v = 11.640
+5v = 5.100
+3.3v = 3.260
VCoreA = +1.590

UPDATE 2: ON test 33, temp @ 46 C
same voltage as above

Are these Ok ?

whats the highest temp it should go ?

On the AS3 vs thermal pad on the NW. I ran the thermal pad for about a week before switching. I don't have a very god P4, and some have said that some NW's are 8 W higher than others thus run hotter. My temps were 45 Idle and 58 Load... STOCK. Intel says anything under 67 is "normal".

I ordered AS3, cleaned off the thermal pad. (It was not hard, but I kept up the cleaning process for a long time on both the HS and the NW just to be sure all the wax was off.) I did see temp drops, but not as much of a difference as I would have liked. I got 43 idle and 55 load when I first booted it up. AS says it can take 72 hours or something like that of operation before you see optimal temps. The lowest I have seen is 42.5 after a few days and probably 60 hours of running.

So it dropped a few degrees, but not as much as I had hoped.

Either my temps are high or my motherboard is giving me the wrong readings. Someone somewhere said that he had 2 TH7-II's and one gave a 15C higher temp than the other. So, I am really not too sure. It is stable at 2.0 (I have a 1.8), but I don't want to go much higher (I'll need to bump the voltage) with temps hovering where they are.

A handy little OpenGL Benchmark that puts a good load on your card and CPU. Lets you quickly see the gains in OpenGL performance from overclocking the Vid card and/or CPU.

It's called, OpenGL Stars. I use it under Win98SE, 2000, and XP. The Window border/menu is not MS Standard but easy to figure out.

http://www.stars.benchmark.pl/

Plus, it's purdy.

My experience with the AS2 and AS3 on a PIII 1GHz (small contact area) with an Alpha PAL 6035 is that it works Great for a day or so, then the effectiveness drops a bit before it stabilizes.

Do you mean that the drop in effectiveness seems permanent as the AS2/AS3 stabilizes? How much (in general)?
