My parents gave me a 1998 Toyota Sienna that was literally falling apart. To get it repaired would have cost almost as much as a cheap car so I got it detailed and traded it in. The dealer gave me $3000 for it and I used that as the down payment for my Yaris Liftback. My parents were happy that I was able to do this on my own after giving me the van. I've had the Yaris now for 8 months and am very happy with it. Sure it's Toyota's cheapest car, but I just needed something reliable that wouldn't cost a fortune on gas. It surprisingly has enough space in it to lug all the stuff I had in my dorm room (furniture was provided by the school so no furniture of course).

OK People, I know this generation gets a different treatment then the one before it, but seriously, how many people you know their parents got them a car 5 times better car than a corolla? All I see in the Univ in my area for the most part, are fresh out of high school punk teenagers that never worked a job in their miserable existence, in spanking new BMW's, M3's, Audi's, Benz in addition to the regular collection of muscle car varitey, most are $ 30k + cars.
Instead of bashing the crap out of this boy like most similar threads go, how about some actual advice here?

OP, if your parents are going to get you a car, however you don't like the choice, then what I would see no harm in getting a different car that you might like better but of the same price range, why don't you suggest that to them? I am sure they wouldn't care as long as they pay the same amount of money and you get a decent car, no? Otherwise, either take the car or you can do what I did back in the day.

When I got out of HS, my parents didn't get me a thing, not because they couldn't nor because they weren't willing to, however I refused any contributions from my parents which was supposed to be a good chunk of money too. Why I did it? Just so that I can look at the car that I got and say this is % 100 mine, if I smash this into a million pieces it's no one's damn business. I think my dad instantly saw a grown up man in me when I told him that. And it wasn't easy, I had to go through the first year of Univ without a car, and it sucked % 100 as the Transportation in my area was like hell on steroids, but after that year was over I was able to save up a good chunk of money that enabled me to get my first car, and then a much much better car after I sold the first one.
Man up OP, a car is a child's first step to manhood it teaches you about life and surprises (accidents, repairs, bills, medical issues ...etc), make that step carefully.

Parents have told me they are only giving me $10,000 for a downpayment on a car when I graduate, kind of disapointed.

Out of Univ or out of HS?
In both cases you will need a beating though, one is more severe than the other

My mom bought me a Gallardo when I turned 16. I killed her with a lead pipe in the study, she KNEW I wanted a vintage Countach :|

No but seriously, when my mom & I went to pick out a decent used car when I was a kid (my $$$) and I saw a nice one I wanted, all I did was *look* at it, and before I even mention anything she gets dreamy eyed and tells the shark.. er, "salesman" "OOH THIS is the one my baby wants!". She was never the sharpest tool in the shed, but it was as though she took retard pills that day. Needless to say, the bastard wouldn't cut me a deal and I had to sit on it for a week & call him back to get some of the price shaved off.

What's wrong with a Corolla? I wish my parents had bought me a car - any car.

heh my parents got me a Ford Ka.... it was the best beater in the whole world, the engine was elderly but willing, it handled like a go kart and managed to drive to swansea (wales) and back (from middlesbrough.... UK google map it) in desperated need of new oil and engine coolant and it never complained once. old beaters have character for sure, i almost felt like that little Ka was my little companion trying its hardest to serve me. i was sad to see it go when i sold it still got pictures of it though it all its faded, rusty glory. good car that. i guarantee you wont get that from a spankin 07 corolla.

it is a boring, old grey man in a V-neck sweater car though, the only corolla here at work is driven by a 60 year old man. hahaha and other than that they are the pakistani's first choice of car and taxi here. and i can see why....the corolla is bullet proof to the max, for what you pay you get a shed load of use and abuse from it.(though they are going to skoda octavias now)

i had to buy my next car, myself, with my own money! how shocking is that eh?.... buying your own definately makes you appreciate how big an undertaking buying a car is, and mine was only £4k second hand, imagine buying it new for £12k! my dads pretty well off, but now, i understand just how much of a burden buying a new ride can be.

since i have to pay for everything on this, its made me a more careful driver.... replacement parts aint cheap.

thats why my focus is in tip top condition, and some freshman punks BMW E39 540i looks likes its been in a rally cross event. that 540 is such a nice ride and he just rags it around like its nothing.... its a 15-20K car USED, some ones even got a Merc E430 as well, though they do take care of that very well.

its odd but here at least, ive noticed that most of the silverspoon kids do the most worthless degrees as well. out of the 130 of us on the engineerin course...the best cars are...

a really old range rover
a BMW Z3 1.8 (painfully slow, and the owner saved up the ££ to get it)
Seat Arosa 1.0l
my mates Skoda Fabia
my focus 1.4CL (bottom of the range)
my other friends Mk5 golf TDI she got as a very late 21st present -
ford fiesta Mk3
ford escort Mk2
Peugeot 106 1.1i
old skool suzuki jimny
rover 214i
numerous bicycles

all bar one are bought with the owners hard earned, but they are all very down to earth cars. seems those who actually work hard at uni have this trait, the dude doing 5 hours a week on a sports course spends most of their time getting plastered and posing in their 330i's or mini cooper S's - this lot also tend to have campus passes and pay to be able to park their cars in halls of residence parking lots too. (permits are needed)

I know of exactly one person who got a new car from her parents. Everyone else either got the hand-me downs or nothing. When I turned 17 my dad co-signed a loan for $1900 for me as a birthday present. It worked out well.

While corolla are nicely made cars, its like flying coach.

Just wanted to post to say that if you don't like their choice, how about go make your own money and buy your own car?

My parents were about to get a Corolla for themselves, but I convinced them not to. The Camry is so much better. I mean yea my mom wanted something to save gas, but seriously you can't carry people nor cargo in a Corolla, and you'd be better off getting something decent sized.

Are you kidding me? The newer Corollas are very spacious and comfortable with passengers AND cargo. What, do you plan on carrying around 5 people and full luggage EVERYDAY?

I feel bad for you. Seriously. It's not going to go down well driving around your boyfriend and your punk friends in that. Darn, what awful parents you have!

Why is the choice only between taking the car, or being unhappy? Why don't you just buy the car that you want, instead of taking one you don't?

I'd really like to know because I have a very difficult time understanding these threads.

I really hate threads like this.
You're an idiot, parents have no respect for kids anymore, they forgot what it's like to be a kid. My friends all drive nicer cars, why should I be stuck in a corrolla?

because you are not paying for it?

That's it, I'm joining the Creationism camp, there is just too much proof that Evolution doesn't work, the OP for example.

I think when I have kids I'll just beat them for the first few years. At least then when I stop, they will be satsified that they are not getting beat.

I fail to see the problem with Corolla's. They are nice cars, solidly reliable, low maintenance, excellent fuel ecomony, etc.

My 00 Corolla has been great, with only minimal problems, all of which were easily resolved.
