first off, yes there are people who are that gifted, albeit they are exceptionally rare; most people don't or can't rely on their natural talent and abilities to get good grades without studying. If you had prior knowledge or intuitive understanding of the material, obviously you have less reading to do that those who don't.

the other thing I would say is that your parents seem to confuse duration with results. Just because you're in the library for X hours doesn't mean that you're Y % more prepared/knowledgeable. I've been in libraries for 8-11 hours and was doing hwk only half the time (if I was lucky). While at the highest levels you need to put in the work to compete with others (because most people already have talent, luck and work sets people apart). There's a saying I learned from a tv cartoon: work smarter, not harder. It's also for that reason that all-nighters are overrated, esp in HS. You CAN get decent grades without pulling all-nighters. I never took one in HS. To get A/A+'s ? Hard to say.

If your parents are readers they should read "Overachievers"
http://www.amazon.com/Overachievers-Secret-Lives-Driven-Kids/dp/1401302017

good grades come with hidden costs at times

I didn't study at all outside high school, and usually did my homework before class. I had a 3.6 gpa up until senior year.

But I'm unable to convince them of otherwise, so, did you go through highschool with out pulling an all-nighter? Did you have to study weeknights and weekends to achieve good grades in your classes?

all-nighters in HIGH SCHOOL?! No way... if you're pulling all nighters in high school you gonna have a helluva time in college

Yea, even in college the only time I pulled an al-nighter was because I was out with the gf until like 5 and had to finish a 12 page essay by 10 that morning.

I honestly don't think I studied a single time in high school. College is another story though.

Nope, didn't study in high school; the only work I took home was major projects - multi-page papers. I managed to go through 4 years of high school without ever reading a novel for English. I never had below a 90 average in any class; I was advanced in all subjects; graduated near the top of my class.

College: majored in mathematics. Never/rarely studied for math exams. Easy A's. 4.0 in my major. I graduated summa cum laude; however, it required a TON of extra effort in the courses outside my major to maintain such good grades. Such wasn't necessary in high school, but in college, since I was paying for the classes, I always tried for the best profs (who weren't necessarily the easiest profs)

All-nighters are generally a sign that the student was lazy or procrastinated during the semester. There's more than enough time to get everything done at college - if you work diligently throughout the week. Treat college like an 8-6 job, taking a 30 minute break for lunch, and you're in good shape, minimal time needs to be spent at other times. Newsflash: college profs say "for every credit hour, expect to spend about 2 credit hours outside of class working." Many students think the profs are exaggerating. 18 credit hours means about 18 hours worth of class per week (roughly) + 36 hours of work outside of class = 54 hours total. 8-6 means 9 1/2 hours of work a day, 5 days a week. That's 47 1/2 hours worth of work. Your evenings are free, your weekends are free. Perhaps a few hours on Sunday night reviewing your notes, and maybe one evening at the library a week doing some research. Unfortunately, most college students socialize away every free minute during the day, and wait til 7 or 8 at night to begin doing work/studying.

The best answer is "it depends". If you graduate high school with algebra as your most advanced math course, and take the most basic science courses, then it's entirely possible to graduate with a relatively minimal amount of studying. However, if you take calculus and AP science courses, then you might have to exercise a few brain cells. You will get out of it what you put into it.

Ya, seriously...

The only times I really needed to study I was usually strapped for time because I procrastinated, and even then, I still got 5+ hours of sleep.

so do they also think you should get a 4.0 gpa in HS so you can go to UCLA or Cal and become someone's peon after your graduate? Enjoy your childhood.

That's not a bad way to start, but it doesn't mean you'll have to do that. Try it, see if it's overkill for you, then adjust accordingly. Definitely better to give a little extra at first for safety than to go back and make up for it later. You'll find that like most everything else your abilities and intelligence will help or hinder you and you can find your own equilibrium.

Also this fails to account for the growing number of people that work full time or more, have other responsibilities, and attend college. Obviously we do things a little different.

I passed South African high school stuff (with a university acceptance level and back in the old days when it was tougher) without really studying or even doing homework. High school is easy and so basic. University was a whole different story, still didn't do all nighters though, tires out your brain and make you performs worse in exams.
