Nope, didn't study in high school; the only work I took home was major projects - multi-page papers. I managed to go through 4 years of high school without ever reading a novel for English. I never had below a 90 average in any class; I was advanced in all subjects; graduated near the top of my class.

College: majored in mathematics. Never/rarely studied for math exams. Easy A's. 4.0 in my major. I graduated summa cum laude; however, it required a TON of extra effort in the courses outside my major to maintain such good grades. Such wasn't necessary in high school, but in college, since I was paying for the classes, I always tried for the best profs (who weren't necessarily the easiest profs)

All-nighters are generally a sign that the student was lazy or procrastinated during the semester. There's more than enough time to get everything done at college - if you work diligently throughout the week. Treat college like an 8-6 job, taking a 30 minute break for lunch, and you're in good shape, minimal time needs to be spent at other times. Newsflash: college profs say "for every credit hour, expect to spend about 2 credit hours outside of class working." Many students think the profs are exaggerating. 18 credit hours means about 18 hours worth of class per week (roughly) + 36 hours of work outside of class = 54 hours total. 8-6 means 9 1/2 hours of work a day, 5 days a week. That's 47 1/2 hours worth of work. Your evenings are free, your weekends are free. Perhaps a few hours on Sunday night reviewing your notes, and maybe one evening at the library a week doing some research. Unfortunately, most college students socialize away every free minute during the day, and wait til 7 or 8 at night to begin doing work/studying.

That's not a bad way to start, but it doesn't mean you'll have to do that. Try it, see if it's overkill for you, then adjust accordingly. Definitely better to give a little extra at first for safety than to go back and make up for it later. You'll find that like most everything else your abilities and intelligence will help or hinder you and you can find your own equilibrium.

Also this fails to account for the growing number of people that work full time or more, have other responsibilities, and attend college. Obviously we do things a little different.

Actually, it did account for one of the people working full time; when I did it, I took either 18 or 19 credit hours every semester, plus had a 30 minute commute each way to school, worked 40+ hours per week, and still had time left for my family.
